Sunday Night Baseball heads to the Midwest for an AL Central scrap between the Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals. The team records aren’t very good, but the division is the most competitive in baseball with just 2.5 games separating all five clubs in the standings.
A three-game losing streak dropped the Tigers out of first place and the team has more worries with a starting rotation that’s crumbling. Detroit will look to stay afloat in the division race while waiting for the return of three starters from the IL.
Tigers at Royals Game Preview
The final game of a 3-game weekend series between AL Central rivals Detroit Tigers and Kansas City Royals is scheduled to be played on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City. First pitch will be delivered at 7:20 p.m. ET with the game streaming on Peacock.
- The Tigers entered the season with arguably the strongest rotation in the AL Central. Backed by two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal, the group has fallen on hard times. Skubal joined Casey Mize and Justin Verlander on the IL.
- It also hasn’t helped that Framber Valdez and Jack Flaherty have struggled. Both were tagged with losses as the Tigers were swept three games at home by Boston earlier in the week. Valdez was also suspended for throwing at an opponent and will miss a start, further compounding Detroit’s issues on the bump.
- It’s not just the pitching staff that’s beset by injuries. Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez also joined the IL forcing the recall of top prospect Jace Jung. Kevin McGonigle has produced since taking over as the everyday shortstop. He’s batting .299 but went hitless in the Boston series.
- Due to the recent issues with the rotation I’m not sure A.J. Hinch knows who will start on Sunday. A bullpen-heavy approach is the likely option and we saw Tyler Holton open consecutive games last week. No moves have been made as of this writing but expect something soon.
- A rough start to the season that saw the Royals lose eight in a row in mid-April turned around thanks to clutch hitting and better pitching from the back end of the bullpen. Closer Lucas Erceg has allowed only one unearned run in his last 7 appearances.
- The Royals had won five in a row and nine of 11 games before Wednesday’s setback to Cleveland. They’re still a few games below .500, but KC started to play the way most expected them to. Bobby Witt Jr. led the rise with a .877 OPS and gold glove defense during the run.
- Noah Cameron is in line to make his seventh start for KC looking to rebound from a tough outing. He was tagged for 9 hits and 4 earned runs taking the loss in a 6-3 setback to the Athletics. The Royals are just 1-4 in the last 5 games started by Cameron.
Tigers at Royals Predictions
- The shock of losing the best pitcher in the AL for possibly months hit the Tigers hard. After it was announced Skubal would have surgery on his elbow the club proceeded to lose three in a row to Boston at home. The Sox haven’t been good and the Tigers had the best home record in MLB before that series.
- The Tigers have the right opponent to get back to their winning ways. They’ve owned the Royals winning 15 of 19 games against them dating back to 2024. Detroit swept KC in mid-April winning all three games by a single run.
