We’ve seen divisions in the past boast a pair of top teams in the NFL, but I can’t recall ever seeing a division like the NFC West. Three teams won at least 12 games last season and the Seattle Seahawks won the Super Bowl. The Seahawks, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers have all made a Super Bowl appearance over the past five seasons and the Rams are the NFL odds favorite to win the Super Bowl in the 2026 season.

The Rams were among the Super Bowl favorites to begin with but shortened their odds with the blockbuster acquisition of Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. NFL MVP Matthew Stafford runs the other side of the football and the situation became hard for retired star Aaron Donald to ignore. The three-time DPOY has contemplated coming out of retirement to play alongside Garrett. Needless to say this has the Rams positioned as the betting favorite to win the NFC West.

NFC West Division Overview

There’s a huge power imbalance in the NFC West with three 12-win playoffs teams from a season ago dueling for the division crown along with the rebuilding Arizona Cardinals. The Rams entered the training camp cycle as a negative-odds favorite to finish at the top of the NFC West standings with reigning Super Bowl champion Seattle and San Francisco close behind. 

Seattle won the NFC West and the Super Bowl last season knocking off their division rivals in the process. The Seahawks finished with two more wins than the Rams and Niners beating them both during a season-ending 7-game winning streak. They then beat the Niners in the Divisional Round and the Rams in the NFC Championship.

The current make up of the NFC West was established in 2002 when the NFL realigned. Though the Rams were located in St. Louis at the time, the format kept their longstanding rivalry with San Francisco intact. When the Rams relocated back to LA in 2016 the division became geographically correct.

Not only are the Rams the betting favorites to win the NFC West and overtake Super Bowl champion Seattle, they are also a big favorite in the Super Bowl futures market. Seattle has the second shortest odds to win the NFC West and the Seahawks are third on the Super Bowl odds board behind Buffalo. Rounding out the NFC West trio is San Francisco, which is also among the top 10 in Super Bowl futures.

The Seattle Seahawks survived to finish atop the NFC West standings with the best record in the NFC and tied for the top mark in the entire NFL. They won their last seven regular season games to finish 14-3 holding off the Rams and Niners, who each went 12-5. According to our research it’s the first time in NFL history that three teams in the same division finished with at least 12 wins in the same season.

The Arizona Cardinals were the NFC West punching bag going 3-14 overall and winless in six division tilts with the worst point-differential in the NFC. Undergoing a complete rebuild it’s going to be a few years before the Cards are competitive.

NFC West Team-by-Team Breakdown

The Rams were a frontrunner even before their epic trade to acquire Myles Garrett. After the deal they became the consensus NFL betting favorite to not only win the NFC West but also the Super Bowl. And we’ve seen this act before. In 2021 the Rams acquired Matthew Stafford in an epic deal with Detroit. Less than a year later the Rams were hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after beating Cincinnati in Super Bowl LVI. 

After winning the Super Bowl last season the Seahawks are going through a transitional phase. Sam Darnold’s redemption tour continues and the “Dark Side” defense is back nearly intact. The Niners haven’t taken down the power lines over Levi’s Stadium, but another season of devastating injuries could be the tipping point. If healthy they are dangerous NFC West wild card.

Los Angeles Rams Division Outlook

Matthew Stafford played like a man 20 years younger last season leading the NFL with 4,707 passing yards, 46 touchdowns and 236 first downs passing. The Rams led the NFL in total offense and scoring with Stafford earning NFL MVP. Adding Myles Garrett to a defense that was good last season showed the Rams are all-in for a Super Bowl run. It even inspired Aaron Donald to consider coming out of retirement, though a decision has yet to be made. 

Seattle Seahawks Division Outlook

The Seahawks rode a rejuvenated Sam Darnold, elite pass-catching weapons, and a smothering defense to a Super Bowl title last season. All are back making Seattle a threat to repeat. The team will break in new OC Brian Fleury and must deal with the loss of Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker. With Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Rashid Shaheed the passing attack is strong. Seattle had the best scoring defense in the NFL last season holding opponents to just 17.2 points per game.

San Francisco 49ers Division Outlook

In an elite division with the Rams and Seahawks, the Niners are held back by injury issues that have plagued them for several seasons. The additions of Mike Evans and Christian Kirk will bolster the passing attack. Brock Purdy will aim to play more than nine games and cut down on his 10 interceptions. Defensively the Niners will welcome the return of key pieces Nick Bosa and Fred Warner from injury. Health is the main concern for the Niners with a good season leaving them as a strong NFC West contender.

Arizona Cardinals Division Outlook

The situation couldn’t have worked out any worse for the Cardinals. Going through a complete overhaul in the same division as some of the strongest teams in the NFL will make for a long season. The club got a taste of that last year going 0-6 against NFC West foes. Former Rams OC Mike LaFleur takes over as head coach and the club parted ways with former No. 1 overall draft pick Kyler Murray. There are building blocks like top draft pick Jeremiyah Love, but the defense is a concern.

Some staggering NFC West stats from last season will show why the division is considered the toughest in the NFL. Not only were there elite individual performances, there was startling team dominance. For the first time ever three divisional teams finished the regular year with at least 12 wins and the NFC West became the fourth division to send three teams to the Divisional Round of the playoffs. 

Seattle, Los Angeles and San Francisco combined to win 38 games going 26-3 against non-divisional opponents. Matthew Stafford was named the NFL MVP and Jaxon Smith-Njigba was the Offensive Player of the Year. The Rams led the NFL in total offense and scoring while the Seahawks had the most stingy defense allowing 17.2 points per game.

NFC West Predictions

It’s hard to imagine the NFC West being as good as it was last season when it became the first division to house three 12+ win teams in the same season. It’s also difficult to see a lot of regression from those teams making the NFC West predictions hard to call. I do like the Rams after they shored up a secondary that got blitzed in the NFC Championship Game loss to Seattle. I also like Seattle’s stingy defense. The Rams have the shortest odds to win the NFC West based on their offseason acquisitions.

Best Bet to Win NFC West

• There isn’t a lot of value backing the Rams at negative money especially with the volatility of a full NFL season.
• The best NFC West odds value pick is the Super Bowl champion Seahawks. Backing them at plus-money offers a prime risk-to-reward ratio for a team that worked through the brutal division last season.
• Despite winning the NFC West and the Super Bowl, Seattle is being treated as a second-tier underdog.

NFC West Sleeper Pick

• If you’re looking to maximize your potential payout, look at the Niners as a longshot sleeper.
• San Francisco offers plenty of value at their price, which is a direct result of the serious injury issues the team has dealt with in previous years.
• The Niners won 12 games last season dealing with injuries and they have a roster capable of big things in the NFC West if the key pieces can stay on the field.

NFC West Team to Avoid

• Arizona is definitely a team to avoid, but their low expectations are already baked into their price. The Niners, however, are a high-risk trap at their current price.
• A team can be a sleeper pick and a team to avoid since the outcome is a result of the same issue.
• The Niners just haven’t been able to shake the injury bug and they’re counting on several players to complete a comeback from devastating ailments. Paying a premium price for a team with a fragile medical history is a gamble.

Factors That Could Decide the NFC West

The overall health of the San Francisco 49ers, but especially their defense, and the chemistry of the Los Angeles Rams’ revamped defense are two major factors that could play a significant role in the outcome of the NFC West race. Brock Purdy played just nine games for the Niners last year, but defensive anchors Nick Bosa and Fred Warner are returning from major injuries. The Rams added Myles Garrett and Trent McDuffie to solidify their defense.

Quarterback Play

• The NFC West features an elite quarterback hierarchy led by last season’s MVP Matthew Stafford.
• Behind more than 4,700 passing yards and 46 touchdowns from Stafford, the Rams led the NFL in scoring and averaged 32 points in their last two matchups with Seattle.
• Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold fall into the next category just behind Stafford. Purdy has been efficient in his role while the late-blooming Darnold just won a Super Bowl.

Strength of Schedule

• Because three NFC West teams won at least 12 games last season, the divisional matchups inflate the schedule difficult for everyone in the group.
• As if it can’t get any worse for Arizona they face the third-toughest schedule in the NFL based on opponents’ winning percentage from a season ago. Six of those games are against elite teams in the NFC West.
