World Cup Group E Odds & Preview

Four-time World Cup champions Germany are the juggernauts of Group E. However, Die Mannschaft have failed to make it into the knockout rounds of the World Cup since their spectacular victory at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Germany were shockingly eliminated in the Group Stage in both Russia and Qatar, leading to a massive turnover with the roster and the staff. That’s a major reason why the Germans find themselves in the second tier of favorites according to the current World Cup betting odds.

World Cup Odds to win Group E

Germany -320
Ecuador +375
Ivory Coast +725
Curacao +15000

Only Brazil and Spain are bigger betting favorites to win their World Cup Group than Germany. The Germans lost their first World Cup qualifier against Slovakia but then won their next five matches by a combined margin of 15-1 to claim a spot in the 2026 World Cup, including a 6-0 thrashing of Slovakia in Leipzig on the final day of qualifying.

Don’t discount Ecuador’s chances of winning Group E though. La Tri turned a lot of heads by finishing runner-up behind Argentina in CONMEBOL qualifying, and they somehow allowed just five goals over 18 matches against the best teams in South America.

Odds to Win World Cup for Group E Teams

Germany +1500
Ecuador +9000
Ivory Coast +25000
Curacao +200000

Every team besides Germany in Group E has long odds to win the World Cup. Ecuador is making its fifth World Cup appearance (all since 2002), and they have only made it to the knockout rounds once. The Ivory Coast have never made it to the knockout rounds of the World Cup despite winning at least one match in each of their three previous World Cup appearances, while Curacao will be making its first visit to the World Cup stage.

Team Previews

Germany

Die Mannschaft have qualified for every World Cup they have entered and are one of the most decorated international teams. Germany have made it to the World Cup Semifinals a whopping 12 times, and that puts them well in front of every other national team in this regard. Brazil have only made it to the World Cup Semifinals eight times, and France and Italy have each made seven trips to the penultimate knockout match.

Incredibly, Manuel Neuer might be making his fifth World Cup appearance. One of the greatest goalkeepers ever seemed an unlikely choice after breaking his leg shortly after Germany was eliminated from the 2022 World Cup, and he announced his retirement from international football in August 2024. However, recent reports indicate that head coach Julian Nagelsmann included Neuer on the preliminary World Cup roster.

Neuer is still playing at an incredibly high level for Bayern Munich despite being 40 years old, and Nagelsmann is considering coaxing Neuer out of retirement given some concerns about Oliver Baumann’s play in goal. Baumann has just 11 caps for the national team although he will turn 36 in June, and he was the No. 1 when Switzerland netted three goals against Germany during a friendly in late March.

Antonio Rudiger is the most experienced player in the back line for Germany and figures to be one of the starting center backs, but his play has been worrisome of late. Real Madrid look set to part ways with Rudiger over the summer, and he looks to be on the downslope of his career. Jonathan Tah and David Raum will likely be starters, but there isn’t a lot of experience aside from those three players.

The strength of Germany this year is in the midfield. Captain Joshua Kimmich will be the most capped player on the team if Neuer isn’t on the roster, and he is still in great form for both club and country. Kai Havertz, Leon Goretzka, Florian Wirtz, Leroy Sane, and Serge Gnabry all figure to play important roles too as experienced players with at least 40 caps and 10 goals for the national team.

There is a gaping hole at the top of the formation though. Germany has struggled to find a consistent striker since the retirement of Miroslav Klose, so they have had to increasingly rely on running their attack through the midfield. Newcastle United’s Nick Woltemade appears to be the probable starter, but he is an unknown quantity with just four goals in 10 caps with Germany.

Ecuador

It will be interesting to see if Ecuador’s back line and style of play can continue at the World Cup. La Tricolor have won at least one match in each of their four previous World Cup appearances and made it to the Round of 16 at the 2006 World Cup in Germany before bowing out to England. Ecuador were one of the top teams not to make it out of the Group Stage in each of their last two World Cup trips, so many experts are expecting a breakthrough performance.

Ecuador have not lost an international match since falling to Brazil on the road in September 2024 during World Cup qualifying. The back line has been the major reason for that with PSG’s Willian Pacho, Arsenal’s Piero Hincapie, and AC Milan’s Pervis Estupinan thriving for the country. Felix Torres, Joel Ordonez, and Angelo Preciado are all talented players too, and every defender on the projected roster is on the right side of 30 as well.

There is a lot of young talent in the midfield too with none of the projected midfielders over the age of 27. Chelsea’s Moises Caicedo is the biggest name in the lineup, but Flamengo’s Gonzalo Plata is someone to watch out for as well. John Yeboah is another player to watch for Ecuador, and he was previously on Germany’s U-17 team.

Captain Enner Valencia is a national legend. Valencia’s 49 international goals are the most by a mile, as only one other player has scored more than 30 goals for Ecuador. Although he failed to make a splash in the Premier League, he has thrived in Liga MX and with Turkish club Fenerbahce over the course of his professional career.

Ivory Coast

This is the first time the Ivory Coast will be at the World Cup since 2024. The Elephants ran into a Moroccan juggernaut during CAF World Cup qualifying in 2018, and they lost on the final day to Cameroon in 2022 to miss out on the competition. This will also be their first time at the World Cup since superstar Didier Drogba was on the roster.

The Ivory Coast’s World Cup betting odds have fallen since their impressive performance against South Korea and Scotland in late March. The Ivory Coast crushed South Korea 4-0 in England and followed that victory up with a 1-0 win over Scotland three days later.

Captain Franck Kessie has over 100 caps for the national team and will be one of the starters in the midfield alongside Maribor’s Jean Michael Seri and Nottingham Forest’s Ibrahim Sangare.

Forward is the position to watch though as the Ivory Coast boast several young talents. Nicolas Pepe is the most veteran choice, but Simon Adingra, Evann Guessand, and Amad Diallo could feature as well. Perhaps the most titillating choice is Yan Diomande. His career has taken off over the last four years, and there are rumors that Liverpool are ready to pay over $100 million to sign Diomande from Red Bull Leipzig.

Curacao

Not much is expected from Curacao during their first appearance at the World Cup. The tiny Caribbean island just off the coast of Venezuela has some of the longest odds to win the World Cup this summer. They recently rehired 78-year-old Dick Advocaat to be their head coach, and he will be the oldest coach in World Cup history.

Curacao greatly benefited from much weaker CONCACAF qualifying due to the United States, Canada, and Mexico being granted guaranteed spots at the World Cup as host nations. They played their first matches outside of CONCACAF in late March, and they were crushed 5-1 by Australia and fell 2-0 to China.

Most of Curacao’s projected roster plays professionally in one of the Netherlands’ top two domestic leagues. Captain Leandro Bacuna has 16 goals in 70 matches and will be the main option in the midfield, while his younger brother Juninho Bacuna is also a player to watch with 14 goals in 47 matches with the national team.

There’s not much hope of Curacao getting out of the Group Stage though, and the country should consider it a success if Curacao notch a goal and earn a result in one of their three matches.
