NCAAF Week 1 Predictions, Odds & Best Bets

With a small sampling of games in the Week 0 window completed, the college football season gets going in full with a loaded Week 1 schedule. Fans should pace themselves with their NCAAF picks since the schedule has games played over five days starting on Thursday, September 3 and ending with a primetime matchup between SMU and Florida State on Labor Day.

The bulk of the action takes place on Saturday with NCAAF futures favorite and preseason No. 1 Ohio State hosts Ball State. The Buckeyes opened as a massive NCAAF betting line favorite of 50.5-points. The only Week 1 matchup between preseason ranked teams takes place on Sunday when No. 24 Louisville and No. 9 Ole Miss play in Nashville.

NCAAF Today: Weekly College Football Schedule

Taking advantage of the downtime between the NFL preseason and regular season, the Week 1 college football slate is a smorgasbord spanning five days with neutral-site blockbusters, a few early season conference matchups and some major head coaching debuts. The game to watch on Thursday features Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes traveling to Atlanta to square off with Georgia Tech in the lone contest between Power 4 programs.

It’s also the only game of the 11 NCAAF today that opened with a point spread lower than 23.5-points. Saturday is reserved for NCAAF games with defending national champion Indiana starting the early window at 12 p.m. ET against North Texas.

Biggest NCAAF Games Today

• The top ranked teams in the country are in action with many of them playing cupcake opponents, so I’m not sure how big the Ohio State romp over Ball State is going to be. While most analysts note that the overall Week 1 schedule is light in what most would consider a “big” game, there are a few high-profile matchups headlining the Week 1 schedule. 
• Saturday’s biggest NCAAF today matchup pairs powerhouse programs LSU and Clemson in a non-conference Power 4 battle of the Tigers. Many observers will be closely following LSU under new coach Lane Kiffin. 
• An intriguing Power 4, neutral-site contest in Atlanta on Saturday features the head coaching debut of Alex Golesh at Auburn. With a reputation as a premier offensive mind, Golesh is tasked with turning Auburn around after five consecutive losing seasons.
• The schedule for Sunday has only three games, but all three involve nationally ranked teams, including the only matchup of the week between ranked foes. In what has the potential to be an offensive showcase, Ole Miss and Louisville battle at a neutral site in Nashville.
• The favorite to win the ACC, Miami travels across the country to take on Stanford in an early-season league game on Friday night. 

NCAAF Scores Today

• Ohio State will have to score more than half a hundred just to match the opening spread in Saturday’s NCAAF today matchup with Ball State. An opening 50.5-point favorite on the NCAAF betting line, this is one of four Week 1 games with a line over 50 points.
• The biggest line on the opening Week 1 board has No. 25 Missouri laying 54.5 points to FCS Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Virginia Tech (vs. VMI) and BYU (vs. Utah Tech) are also NCAAF favorites of more than 50 points.
• Based on past results we could expect the NCAAF score between Oregon and Boise State to be closer than the 24.5-point spread. The Ducks won for the first time in the series beating the Broncos 37-34 two years ago as a 17.5-point favorite. 
• No. 14 USC got a jump on the ranked crowd beating San Jose State, 42-26, in a closer than expected outcome. The NCAAF score was skewed when the Trojans pulled most of their starters after building a 35-3 lead in the third quarter. USC takes on Fresno State on Friday as a 23.5-point favorite.

NCAAF Odds for This Week

With a few games already in the books we get a full menu of matchups in Week 1 of the college football season. NCAAF betting lines including point spreads and totals are now locked for several high-profile matchups and some massive point spreads. It’s not unusual to see ranked teams as big favorites in early season non-conference games, but the landscape in today’s game leaves plenty of questions before teams take the field for the first time. One thing is for sure and that’s that the power programs will always have a massive edge over their counterparts in the Group of 6. 

How to Read NCAAF Betting Lines

• Reading NCAAF betting lines requires understanding of three main types of wagers; the point spread, moneyline and the total (over/under). 
• The spread is designed to even the playing field between two unequal teams. The minus (-) sign indicates the favorite with the team needing to win by more than that number to win the bet. The underdog is shown with a plus (+) sign. They can with the game outright or lose by fewer points than the number to cash a winning ticket.
• The moneyline is a straight bet on the game winner. There is no point spread, but the payouts are adjusted based on who’s expected to win. The minus (-) number is the amount you must risk to profit $100. The plus (+) number is the amount of profit on a $100 wager.
• The total is a bet on the combined number of points scored regardless of who wins the game. If the teams score more than the set number the OVER wins. If fewer points are scored than the number the UNDER is a winner.

NCAAF Lines Movement to Watch

• There are several factors that will trigger NCAAF betting lines movement. Roster announcements prior to the first game of the season are a reason and once into the campaign injuries become a major factor. 
• There have been notable spread shifts ahead of the Week 1 openers with Alabama moving up from -25.5 past the key numbers of 27 and 28 to -28.5 for their showdown with East Carolina. 
• The line in the non-conference tilt between former Pac-12 schools UCLA and Cal jumped the fence with the Bruins moving to a slim 1.5-point favorite. There was a lot of offseason hype surrounding UCLA with new head coach Bob Chesney remaking the entire roster.
• Stanford’s Week 0 win over Hawai’i did nothing to help their position in NCAAF odds for the Week 1 showdown with No. 7 Miami on Friday night. The heavily backed Canes opened at -21.5 and climbed three points quickly to the -24.5-point line.

NCAAF Predictions for This Week

There are a lot more games to choose from in our NCAAF predictions with just about every FBS school officially getting the season underway in Week 1. There are the standard body bag games that Power programs play. Schools like Ohio State pay a nice chunk of change to G6 programs for the pleasure of beating them up. The Buckeyes should easily handle Ball State on Saturday, but giving 50.5-points is quite excessive. 

Two games on the Week 1 schedule stand out for their matchups and NCAAF odds. The Power 4 matchup between Clemson and LSU marks the anticipated debut of Lane Kiffin as LSU’s head coach. After their worst season in 15 years Clemson is looking to get back in the playoff picture. In a rare move they dipped into the portal to strengthen the roster and I like Clemson to stay within the 10.5-point line. The only ranked matchup takes place on Sunday night with Ole Miss a 7-point favorite over Louisville.

NCAAF Game Predictions

• It’s nice to see an old Pac-12 rivalry renewed, and that makes me want to take a flyer on the game between UCLA and Cal. Most experts expect a close game with very little separating the clubs. The Bruins made a strong hire in Bob Chesney from JMU and rebuilt their roster from the portal around QB Nico Iamaleava.
• The only Week 1 contest between ranked teams is one we have to make a NCAAF prediction on. Ole Miss didn’t skip a beat after Lane Kiffin left and a cadre of playmakers remains on the roster led by Trinidad Chambliss. Louisville boasted a top 20 defense last season, though a lot of the production is gone leaving the Rebels with holes to expose.
• The neutral-site game between Baylor and Auburn is a good example of how programs can quickly change. Auburn hired Alex Golesh from USF to revitalize the program after five straight losing seasons. Byrum Brown followed Golesh from USF and is one of the top QBs few fans have heard of. I trust Auburn to cover the 7-point spread in our NCAAF picks.

Upset Watch for This Week

• I have to go back to the LSU/Clemson game as a potential upset. LSU is breaking in a new roster as well as a new coach with plenty of off-field antics that could be considered distractions. Dabo Swinney’s group is getting much respect this season, but they have program veterans for stability and plugged holes through the portal
• A lot of computer simulations are backing Cincinnati in their opener against Boston College. NCAAF odds also have the Bearcats as a 7.5-point favorite. New Eagles coach Bill O’Brien has been successful at his stops and returns a veteran roster that could give Cincy all it can handle.

NCAAF Picks and Best Bets

Week 1 of the college football season gives us a first look at most of the top programs in the country. Analysts are targeting teams with roster advantages created by the transfer portal as early season NCAAF best bets. However, as tempting as it is to back programs like Ohio State, Oregon and Georgia, they are laying a lot of points. And with national championship aspirations don’t expect those clubs to use their starters for an entire game.

We saw what happened to USC last week against San Jose State, getting outscored 23-7 in the fourth quarter and failing to cover the 38.5-point NCAAF odds.

Best NCAAF Spread Picks

• Florida State won its opener but looked sluggish in a 34-17 win over New Mexico State where the Noles failed to cover the 31.5-point NCAAF line. SMU enters ranked No. 19 and boasts senior QB Kevin Jennings to run a potent offense. Back the Mustangs minus the 3-points as a NCAAF best bet.
• We have an overhyped LSU squad against Clemson flying under the radar. I do think LSU has enough to win the game outright, but it’s going to be closer than most anticipate with Clemson’s defensive front and athletic secondary making things more difficult. Our NCAAF pick is backing Dabo’s gang with 10.5-points.

Best NCAAF Over/Under Picks

• Both Ole Miss and Louisville can move the football with some of the best college football talent on the field for Sunday’s ACC vs. SEC showdown. What makes backing the OVER in this game more enticing is that Louisville lost several key players from a unit that ranked 16th in total defense a season ago. Ole Miss returns offensive sparkplugs Trinidad Chambliss and Kewan Lacy.
• With a major showdown against Michigan in Week 2 don’t expect Oklahoma to open up the playbook and keep its starters in the game for too long against an overmatched UTEP club. With that in mind this game holds great potential to finish below the total of 50.5 since the Miners have scored a total of 17 points in their previous three games against Power foes.

NCAAF Best Bets This Week

• Florida State has a game under its belt, but it was a lackluster effort against New Mexico State. That doesn’t bode well for the Week 1 duel with SMU. The Mustangs have built an offensive juggernaut behind Kevin Jennings and they return key pieces to the ACC’s fourth-ranked scoring defense. SMU at -3 is a NCAAF best bet.
• Simulations of the Auburn/Baylor game strongly back Auburn to cover the 7-point NCAAF line. The Tigers upgraded the program by hiring USF’s Alex Golesh to unleash his relentless, fast-break offense. Golesh brought Byrum Brown to run the attack against Baylor’s defense that ranked 122nd nationally last season. 

NCAAF Futures Market Update

The NCAAF futures market has been dominated by the Big Ten and SEC with 10 of the top 13 national championship favorites housed in one of those conferences. Independent Notre Dame holds a premium spot just slightly ahead of Ohio State as the betting favorite. Those two programs have been jockeying for position all summer. At the time of this writing six schools had shorter than 10/1 odds with no single team boasting championship odds below +550.

Heisman Trophy Futures

Over the last 20 years only four non-quarterbacks have won the Heisman Trophy. The field in 2026 is heavily populated with signal-callers meaning the trend is likely to continue. With expectations soaring in South Bend, Notre Dame’s CJ Carr continues to be the Heisman Trophy futures favorite, though the NCAAF odds suggest a tight race. Carr has the edge after a strong freshman campaign and a clean schedule that will allow him to pad his stats. Of the top 14 favorites on the NCAAF futures board only receiver Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State is not a quarterback.

Final NCAAF Betting Thoughts

The test really begins once the season starts. Lines have been heavily adjusted all summer with Week 1 notoriously difficult because you are betting on what teams should be rather than what they are. A NCAAF best bet is to not lay a heavy double-digit spread simply because the team is a traditional powerhouse. Strategies have changed with the new CFP format and teams are reluctant to risk injury in early non-conference games. It pays to trust the market numbers over a team’s logo, at least early in the season.

Look for power programs playing a cupcake opponent in Week 1 with a major matchup scheduled in Week 2. Oklahoma is an example starting their season with UTEP ahead of a matchup with Michigan. Coaches will pull starters after securing a safe lead making big underdogs or UNDERs on the total profitable in the second half.
