TGL Preview: The Bay vs Jupiter

The final match of Tomorrow’s Golf League second season will determine the playoff field. The Bay GC and Jupiter Links GC enter the week among four teams looking to secure the last 2 playoff spots. Atlanta and Boston are already in. This is a big few days for Tigers group with wins over Boston on Sunday and The Bay on Tuesday giving them a playoff spot after the team went 1-4 last season.

The teams that missed the playoffs last season can get in the tournament this time. Boston, which failed to win a match last season, already qualified with a 9-2 win over New York GC in last week’s doubleheader. Jupiter Links can get in with wins in Sunday’s match and again against The Bay in the regular season finale.

If Jupiter Links fails to win both matches its destiny is out of its hands and tie-breakers will likely come into play. The situation is more straightforward for The Bay. Its clearest path to the playoffs is just beating Jupiter Links in Tuesday’s match and not leaving anything to chance.

While the other five teams were battling it out in last week’s twin doubleheader, Jupiter Links was watching the festivities getting an idea of what it needed to do to reach the postseason. JLGC enters the final three matches in last place in the standings but is the wild card as the only team playing twice in the final week of the regular season.

Jupiter Links snapped a 5-match losing streak and put itself in the middle of the playoff picture with an upset 8-6 win over defending champion Atlanta on Feb. 2. It was the first time the team scored more than 4 points in a match and their first regulation TGL victory.

After losing their first 2 matches of the season The Bay has rebounded with wins over LA and New York to get right back in the thick of the playoff race. They enter the week with the second best chance of securing one of the two playoff spots with TGL’s Scoresight giving them a 69 percent chance.

Jupiter is looking to build off its best TGL performance, beating Atlanta a few weeks ago. Alternate Akshay Bhatia has been a huge part of the team in the absence of Tiger Woods and Tom Kim. He nailed several crucial shots against Atlanta winning a Singles point and he’s helped Jupiter in Triples with 9 points won.

Nothing has been confirmed at the time of this writing but Tiger Woods is inching closer to a return. He recently mentioned his desire to play in this year’s Masters and said before the start of the TGL season he would like to compete. This would be the perfect time and place for him to get a few swings in.

Tomorrow’s Golf League Schedule and Betting Lines

The final match of the season will have an impact on the standings and deciding which teams make it to the semifinal round, which will be contested on Mar. 17 in a single elimination doubleheader. The No. 1 seed will face the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 seed plays the No. 3 seed.

Entering the last week of the regular season Boston has the shortest championship TGL betting odds at +220. Jupiter Links boasts the longest odds at +1000 but could be a good pick since they are the only team with 2 matches remaining. That gives them some wiggle room to reach the playoffs and then anything can happen.

Jupiter Links is an intriguing team to wager on given their place as the only team to play twice during the final week of the regular season. They enter their final matches in last place but having a match in hand gives them an edge in the futures odds.

Max Homa, Kevin Kisner and Akshay Bhatia didn’t miss many shots in Jupiter’s win over Atlanta. Also impressive was the team's rebound from being down 2-0 after two holes. Jupiter won the next five holes with all 3 members contributing in their 5-2 Triples win over Atlanta.

For the first time in several matches Jupiter used the Hammer to its advantage winning 3 points in its win over Atlanta. Tiger’s squad has been the worst at Hammer strategy but the tide turned with Jupiter getting a 2-point swing on the 12th to go up 8-2 and essentially put the match away.

You don’t know who’s going to come up large for The Bay with several different players standing out in their last 2 matches. Making their TGL debuts against LA a few weeks ago, Neal Shipley and Luke Clanton propelled The Bay to an 11-5 victory. Shipley recorded the first ace in TGL history and Clanton won 2 Singles points.

With an entirely different lineup last week, The Bay won its second straight match beating New York 5-3. Ludvig Aberg and Wyndham Clark won crucial Singles points on 13 and 14 breaking a tie and giving The Bay the win improving its playoff chances.

With Tiger and Tom Kim missing a majority of the season Jupiter Links has used alternate Akshay Bhatia, and he’s been up to the task. He had a number of clutch shots setting his team up with scoring opportunities, the JLGC did the rest scoring more than 4 points for the first time in the 8-6 win. The match wasn’t even that close with Atlanta winning 4 points over the last 2 holes.

The Bay has options but in a match where a win gets you in the playoffs look for the regulars to make an appearance. Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark and Shane Lowry have been the anchors for the team that went 4-1 last year and carried the momentum given them by the play of youngsters Shipley and Clanton in a win over LA.

Depending on the outcome of Jupiter’s Sunday match with Boston Common Golf, this could be a winner take all match raising the stakes in a big way. The Bay knows what it has to do.
