An American League matchup between the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers is featured on Sunday Night Baseball this week. The Tigers must shuffle their rotation for this game with scheduled starter Casey Mize going on the IL recently.
The loss of Mize is a blow to the Tigers who boast the best home record in the majors. The Rangers have used the best bullpen in MLB to contend for the top spot in the AL West. Jack Leiter is expected to make his seventh start of the season for Texas.
Rangers at Tigers Game Preview
The final game of a 3-game weekend series between the Texas Rangers and Detroit Tigers is scheduled to be played on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Comerica Park in Detroit. First pitch is scheduled for 7:20 p.m. ET with game streaming on Peacock.
- The Tigers got a double whammy on the injury front in Tuesday’s loss to Atlanta. Mize is 2-2 with a 2.90 ERA and will miss a few starts with a leg injury. The club also lost Javier Baez to an ankle injury. Baez is hitting .256 with a pair of home runs.
- Detroit is hoping to overcome the loss of Mize and Baez with a six-game home stand. The Tigers enter this series with the best home record in the majors at 10-2. Mize won both his starts at Comerica Park.
- The Tigers have the third best team batting average in the AL and score nearly 4.5 runs per game. A lot of that can be attributed to Kevin McGonigle, who’s made an early season push for Rookie of the Year. He’s batting .327 and extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in Tuesday’s loss to Atlanta.
- What’s been a weak AL in the early part of the season is keeping Detroit and Texas not only in the wild card race but also in the hunt for first place in their divisions. There is plenty of baseball to be played and things will change, but teams that are expected to be better than they’ve been can make a run.
- Texas moved to 15-16 breaking a 3-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Yankees on Wednesday. It’s been a struggle offensively with the Rangers scoring their most runs in the last four games. They cashed the UNDER on the MLB betting line in a fifth straight game and in six of their last seven.
- For the season the Rangers are averaging just 3.87 runs per game with a .236 team average. Josh Jung has been a threat at the dish hitting .381 with 17 RBIs over 24 games in April, but that hasn’t been enough to prevent Texas from having the second best UNDER percentage in the majors.
Rangers at Tigers Predictions
- The best bullpen in MLB has helped the Rangers stay near the .500 mark. The group hasn’t been perfect but relievers boast the lowest ERA at 2.82 with a respectable 1.15 WHIP while opponents are hitting just .215. Jacob Latz tossed 2.0 scoreless innings on Wednesday for his second save lowering his ERA to 1.08.
- Detroit’s home park has been a pitchers haven in recent years. Combine that with how both teams have pitched this season and it appears as though runs will be hard to come by. The Rangers are near the bottom in runs scored partly due to their .207 average with two outs and runners in scoring position.
