It’s easy to back the favorite especially when that team is Ohio State. They’ve dominated recently, winning a national championship a few seasons ago. The roster is experienced, deep and good and the offense has special talents. However, a tough schedule, short odds, and some inexperienced defenders have me looking elsewhere. And there are plenty of quality teams to select from.

Predicted Conference Champion

• In their two seasons in the Big Ten the Oregon Ducks are 17-1 in conference games and 26-3 overall. Those setbacks were to Indiana (twice) and Ohio State.
• Oregon returns a number of key players from the squad that went 13-2 last season led by Dante Moore. Moore skipped the NFL Draft for another shot and should deliver like last season when he completed 73 percent of his passes for more than 3,500 yards and 30 TDs.
• An explosive offense and a potentially dominant defense put Oregon at the top of the list to win the Big Ten championship.

One Team That Could Surprise

• USC is being overlooked and in my opinion undervalued entering the season making them a prime pick as a team that could surprise in the Big Ten standings.
• Holding the Trojans back is a demanding schedule that has them playing the top three favorites. They do get Oregon and Ohio State at home but travel to Indiana late in the season.
• Jayden Maiava returns to direct a potent offensive attack, but the team’s ceiling depends on how the defense adjusts to new coordinator Gary Patterson.
• The Trojans have experienced late season collapses under Lincoln Riley and avoiding another letdown could take the Trojans into the Big Ten title game.
