NHL Preview: Bruins at Red Wings Odds & Betting Tips

Teams in the thick of the playoff race in the congested Eastern Conference will tangle in an Original Six matchup with crucial points on the line. At the time of this writing the Bruins and Red Wings had the exact same record and held the two wild card spots in the conference.

The teams haven’t been playing their best hockey of late allowing the playoff race to tighten up. They are also close enough to the top of the Atlantic Division where a run of wins could move them into a top 3.

Bruins at Red Wings Preview

The fourth and final meeting of the regular season between Atlantic Division rivals the Boston Bruins and Detroit Red Wings goes down on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. Puck drop is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET on ABC.

Public Betting Odds Factors

  • Neither team is doing its best to secure a playoff spot. The Bruins have lost 8 of 13 leaving valuable points on the table with 5 of those setbacks in extra time. They dropped consecutive games to New Jersey and Montreal in overtime.
  • The Red Wings had lost 3 in a row and 5 of 6 before a critical 5-2 win over Calgary on Monday. The Wings also showed signs of snapping out of an offensive slumber by scoring their most goals in a game in more than a month.
  • As poorly as the teams have played recently they are in position to make a run at first place in the division with a string of wins. Through games of Mar. 18 they are just 2 points behind Montreal, 4 points behind second-place Tampa Bay and 8 points behind first-place Buffalo.
  • Despite having a 37-23-8 record through their first 68 games, the Red Wings are the only club in the East currently in a playoff spot with a negative goal differential of minus-3.
  • Detroit gets a bulk of its offense from Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond. The trio has combined for more than 41 percent of the team’s goals with DeBrincat tallying a team-high 33. The Wings are 20th in the NHL averaging 2.91 goals per game.
  • The Bruins are hoping Pavel Zacha stays hot to help the playoff push. Zacha scored twice against Montreal giving him 7 goals in his last 7 games and a career best 22 for the season. He had his second hat trick of the year during his run in a loss to Pittsburgh two weeks ago.

Bruins at Red Wings Predictions

  • Recent scoring woes have led to both teams having a run on the UNDER vs. the NHL spread. The UNDER is 8-3 in Boston’s last 11 games and is 8-4-1 in Detroit’s past 13 outings. This is an oddity for the Bruins, who rank 11th in goals per game and have gone OVER the total in 53 percent of their games overall.
  • Boston can help itself on special teams. The Bruins have the 8th best power play in the NHL converting nearly 24 percent of their chances. Detroit’s penalty kill ranks in the bottom half of the league at 78.7 percent.

Bruins at Red Wings Betting Tips

  • From a player perspective it would be a good idea to look at Boston’s leading scorer David Pastrnak. He extended his points streak to 7 games with an assist against Montreal and he has 10 points (4G, 6A) in that span.
  • The Wings haven’t had much of a home ice advantage recently. They broke a 5-game home losing streak with their win over Calgary and are 19-11-3 at home.
  • One of the top defensive teams in recent years, the Bruins have slumped this season. They’ve allowed 3 or more goals in 13 of their last 18 games and are 18th in the NHL in goals against.

Bruins at Red Wings Head to Head and Key Stats

  • According to Sports Reference the Original Six clubs have met 624 times with each winning 262 games with a goal differential of Boston +38.
  • The teams last met on Jan. 13 with Jeremy Swayman stopping 24 shots in a 3-0 Bruins victory, their second in the first 3 games of the season series.
  • 5 of the last 6 matchups have played UNDER the closing NHL spread
