NFL Week 9: Seahawks at Commanders Odds & Picks

With three straight losses and their season slowly slipping away, the Washington Commanders are hoping the return of last year’s Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels can turn things around starting with a matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in the Week 9 Sunday Night Football contest. The game kicks off at 8:20 p.m. ET on November 2 from Northwest Stadium in Landover, MD and will be televised on NBC.

Seahawks at Commanders Preview

Coming off their bye, the Seahawks had an extra week to prepare for this matchup and they look to keep pace in the congested NFC West. Seattle has won two in a row and five of their last six to enter the week tied with the Rams at 5-2, a half game up on the 49ers. The signing of Sam Darnold and a revitalized defense have been big reasons for the team’s success.

Darnold resurrected his career in Minnesota and parlayed that into a big contract in Seattle. He’s been worth the investment averaging a NFL best 9.1 yards per pass attempt with a 109.2 passer rating for the sixth highest scoring team. Defensively the Seahawks have held six of seven opponents to 20 points or less and boast the 7th best scoring defense.

  • The Seahawks have won and covered the spread against the NFL betting odds in all three road games this season and they’ve won 9 straight on the road overall going 7-2 ATS.
  • Seattle is 5-3 SU and ATS in its last eight road games following a bye.
  • The Seahawks have the second-most giveaways in the NFL with 12 and their turnover differential of minus-4 ranks them tied for 22nd.
  • Darnold leads the NFL averaging 9.1 yards per pass attempt and the Seahawks are third averaging 6.03 yards per play.

The return of Jayden Daniels might be too late for the Commanders, who have lost three in a row and enter the contest at 3-5. Daniels has missed three games and parts of another with the team going 1-3. Things got particularly ugly last week in Kansas City with the Commandos scoring their fewest points in 38 games in the 28-7 setback.

There were some positive signs on defense for a club that ranks 27th in yards allowed and 21st in points against. Jacob Martin had two of the team’s three sacks and for the first time in three games they had a takeaway intercepting Patrick Mahomes twice. They had just three takeaways in the first seven games.

  • The Commanders have the third-fewest takeaways in the NFL and they’re tied for 26th with a minus-5 turnover differential.
  • In his five games Daniels has thrown for 1,032 yards with eight TDs and one interception while also rushing for 211 yards and a score.
  • Washington has played UNDER the total in five of eight games.
  • The Commanders have scored a TD on 75 percent of their red zone trips.

Seahawks at Commanders Predictions

Daniels is a hell of a player when he’s at full strength. Take some of the edge away and it’s more difficult for him to make plays. Seattle plays a swarming brand of defense and could contain Daniels, making scoring more difficult. Seattle hasn’t exactly lit up the scoreboard and the Commanders played with an edge last week. Buying down the total looks like a move that will pay off, but as is I have to go with teams staying UNDER the number.
