NCAA West Region 2026: Odds & Predictions

The West Region of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament runs through No. 1 seed Arizona. The Wildcats are battle-tested after racing through a tough Big 12 regular season and topping it off with wins over Iowa State and Houston to win the conference tournament. UA is well balanced and deep, things that lead to deep tournament runs.

Though Cats are a negative odds favorite on the March Madness betting line to win the region, opponents aren’t going to roll over for them. The region boasts powerhouse teams like Big Ten champ Purdue, perennial NCAA Tournament contender Gonzaga and SEC champion Arkansas. And in a single-elimination format anything can happen.

There are plenty of star players in the region; unfortunately for the rest of the teams Arizona has most of them. Wisconsin has potential for big things behind the backcourt of Nick Boyd and John Blackwell. And Arkansas rode the outstanding play of Darius Acuff Jr. to 26 wins.

West Region Preview

  • Arizona won its first 23 games and enters the Tournament with an overall record of 32-2. The Cats are one of two teams to rank among the top 5 in offense and defensive efficiency and they have the second-best net rating in the country behind Duke. Big 12 Player of the Year Jaden Bradley and leading scorer Brayden Burries man the backcourt with Koa Peat and Mo Krivas manning a dominant frontcourt.
  • Purdue got hot at the right time and now looks to carry over the momentum of beating Michigan for the Big Ten title. An experienced roster of upperclassmen led by Braden Smith and Trey Kaufman-Renn helped the Boilermakers win 26 games.
  • The Hogs are led by possibly the best backcourt player in college basketball. SEC Player of the Year Darius Acuff Jr. scored 30 points in the title game win over Vanderbilt and averages 23 points and 6.5 assists. Oh, and legendary coach John Calipari is on the bench.
  • The winner of the First Four game between No. 11 Texas and NC State will carry momentum into the first round matchup with No. 6 BYU. And the Cougs struggled down the stretch missing injured Richie Saunders. The stage is set, however, for lottery pick AJ Dybantsa.
  • Northeast Conference champion Long Island University has the first round task of facing Arizona and they’ll do it as a whopping 30.5-point underdog. The Sharks got the same amount of points against Georgia in late December and covered the college basketball spread in an 89-74 setback.
  • No team seeded lower than No. 8 has advanced out of a regional so it’s a good strategy to avoid the teams at the bottom. They are good stories and a lot of casual fans will be cheering for them, but clubs like Kennesaw State, Queens and LIU should be off the radar.

West Region Predictions

  • Arkansas came so close last year to advancing to the Elite Eight and this team is arguably even better. Acuff Jr. is one of the best players in the country, Meleek Thomas can score and the Hogs are relentless on defense.
  • After giving reasons to fade Arizona I’m going to back them as the regional winner despite the price. There is absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t cut down the nets in San Jose given their roster. They are deep and efficient on both ends of the floor and the Cats are due.

West Region Betting Tips

  • Throwing down on a negative odds favorite to win the region isn’t the best value move. And when teams like Purdue, Arkansas, Gonzaga and Wisconsin have the talent, depth and coaching to rise to the occasion, it makes sense to think and bet outside the box.
  • This might be the best team Arizona has had under Tommy Lloyd, but there is a history and isn’t good. In three of the Wildcats’ four trips to the dance under the coach they were upset on the big stage losing twice in the Sweet 16 and another time in the First Round
  • There are always upsets in the NCAA Tournament and it’s all about picking the right ones to protect your bracket and win a few extra bucks. Traditionally the No. 12 seed has covered more than any other lower seed, but I like the Texas/NC State winner to beat BYU in the first round.
