The San Antonio Spurs and Victor Wembanyama stand in the way of the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder making a return trip to the NBA Finals. In a way the NBA Western Conference Final is the championship series with the two best teams during the regular season going at it.

OKC earned home court advantage finishing two games better than the Spurs during the regular season and the Thunder are favored in NBA Playoff odds to win the series. However, San Antonio won four of five matchups during the year handing the Thunder more than 22 percent of their losses.

The Thunder are back in the NBA Western Conference Final for a second straight season. They beat Minnesota in 5 games last year en route to their first NBA title in OKC and the second for the franchise. They also had the best regular season record in the NBA for a second year in a row.

San Antonio battled with OKC for the top seed in the West all season, eventually falling two short in the standings. The Spurs had a 28-game improvement from last season winning 62 games and finished with the second-best record in the NBA. 

The Western Conference was the strongest in the NBA during the season with four of the top six records belonging to the West. In addition, the three teams with the worst overall records – Washington, Indiana and Brooklyn – all reside in the Eastern Conference.

OKC’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Spurs’ Victor Wembanyama are in the MVP conversation and deservedly so. However, both teams are much more than just their superstar player. The Thunder were the most efficient team during the season and San Antonio won its most games in a decade despite Wemby missing 18 contests.

Road to the Western Conference Finals

• Winning in the playoffs is not as easy as the Thunder made it look in Round 1. They swept Phoenix winning by an average of nearly 15 points. The Spurs took care of Portland in five games, winning the last three after a shocking Game 2 home loss.
• OKC was just as dominant against the Lakers in conference semifinals sweeping that series by an average of 16 points. The Thunder’s 5-point win in Game 4 was their closest in the playoffs. The Spurs went on a rampage after their conference semifinal with Minnesota was even at 2-2. The Spurs won the next two games by a total of 59 points.
• Wembanyama has been a force on the defensive end leading the playoffs in blocks while amassing the second most rebounds per game. The Spurs allowed an average of only 102.5 points in the first two rounds.

NBA Western Conference Finals 2026 Match Preview

For the first time in nearly half a century two teams with 62 or more regular season wins are battling in a conference final. This highly anticipated NBA Western Conference Finals matchup has league heavyweights squaring off with the Thunder favored to win the series in NBA Playoff odds. 

For the second straight year OKC posted the best record in the NBA finishing two games better than the Spurs. Behind the play of Victor Wembanyama the Spurs won 28 more games this season than they did last year to secure the next best regular season record.

A deep roster carried the Thunder to another monster season. Led by SGA, who averaged 31.1 points during the season, the Thunder had five players average more than 11.0 points. The return of Jalen Williams, who was sidelined early in the first round, makes OKC that much stronger.

With Wembanyama anchored in the middle, the Spurs are one of the top defensive teams in the NBA. Not only does Wemby block shots at an alarming rate he also alters many others, something that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. 

And the Spurs can score the ball, too. Six players are averaging more than 10 points this postseason with Wemby tossing in 20.3 per game. The Spurs are averaging nearly 117.0 points per game in their 11 games.

Key Players to Watch

• All eyes will be on MVP finalists Gilgeous-Alexander and Wembanyama. SGA is averaging team bests of 29.1 points and 7.1 assists in the playoffs. Wemby has blocked 4.1 shots per game and scores 23 points with almost 11 rebounds on average.
• With his team winning every playoff game so far, Jalen Williams had the luxury of resting his sore hamstring. He declared recently that he’s healthy entering the Western Conference Final series. 
• Recently crowned NBA Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson will play a major role in the series. The emotional spark provides high scoring bursts off the bench and will counter OKC’s deep bench.

NBA Western Conference Finals 2026 Predictions and Expectations

It has a way to go to match the Lakers/Celtics rivalry, but given the overall youth, depth and star power of the Thunder and Spurs this could be the NBA’s next defining rivalry. Not only do we have a matchup between teams that won at least 62 regular season games, MVP finalists SGA and Wembanyama go head-to-head.

The NBA Western Conference Finals prediction has this series going the distance since the teams are closely matched in the win column and nearly every statistical category. 

San Antonio has the psychological edge after winning four of five games during the regular season, including a matchup in the NBA Cup tournament. Three of San Antonio’s four wins were by double digits, but OKC was a 21-point winner at home in its only regular season victory.

• Both clubs are healthy entering the series. Jalen Williams confirmed he’s recovered from a hamstring injury that forced him to miss the Lakers series. De’Aaron Fox and Dylan Harper have been removed from the Spurs injury list after dealing with minor issues earlier in the postseason.
• Both teams have deep, versatile rosters and can easily go 10-deep. The Spurs boast new Sixth Man of the Year Keldon Johnson.
• OKC’s Mark Daigneault has a Coach of the Year award and NBA title on his resume and is clearly one of the top coaches in the league.

The NBA Western Conference Finals history is rich with success. The winner has gone on to claim the NBA title 18 times in the last 27 years. The Spurs made eight NBA Western Conference Finals appearances under Gregg Popovich, but are back for the first time since 2017. 

OKC’s second round sweep of the Lakers prevented LA from adding to its record number of NBA Western Conference Finals visits. The Lakers have appeared 19 times with the Golden State Warriors next with seven.

The Thunder were involved in one of the most dramatic NBA Western Conference Finals back in 2016. OKC held a 3-1 series lead over Golden State before collapsing, losing the next three. OKC beat San Antonio in six games in the conference semifinals to advance.
