MLB Wild Card Predictions: Matchups, Odds & Preview

It took six months and every one of the 162 games on the regular season schedule to determine the MLB schedule for the 2026 postseason field. The playoff race begins on Tuesday when the Wild Card series gets underway and MLB Wild Card odds are available to bet right now.

A tremendous last few months lifted the San Diego Padres to the top of the National League field giving them hosting rights against the team they lost to last season, the Chicago Cubs. One of the greatest rivalries in sports will headline the American League with the Yankees hosting the Red Sox in another Wild Card rematch from a season ago.

MLB Wild Card Series Odds

MLB odds for the Wild Card round are reflective of how close the teams were during the regular season. The odds also sway in favor of the higher-seeded teams that are hosting all three games (if needed) of the series. The National League series are closer on the opening number with Atlanta (-125) and San Diego (-120) the favorites. Atlanta finished six games better than Philly and won the season series 9-4. San Diego had one of the best home records in the majors at 51-31 and opened as a slight favorite over the Cubs. Chicago won the season series 5-1 outscoring the Pads 55-28.

The American League Wild Card series have slightly wider odds with the Yankees opening as the biggest favorite over Boston and Houston at -145 to beat the upstart White Sox. New York won seven of 13 games against Boston during the season going 4-2 at Yankee Stadium. Houston won five of seven games over the White Sox during the season, including three of four games in Houston.

American League Wild Card Series Preview

The Red Sox and Yankees renew their rivalry for the second straight postseason. New York won last year’s Wild Card series 2-1 winning the last two games. Game 1 starter and AL Cy Young frontrunner Cam Schlittler will look to get the Yankees off to a fast start.

Schlittler had a dominant season going 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA. He tossed 8.0 shutout innings with 12 strikeouts in the series-clinching game last year. The Yankees won the season series 7-6 but will be without Aaron Judge for the Wild Card round.

After ending a streak of eight straight playoff appearances last year, the Houston Astros are back as winners of the mediocre American League West. The ‘Stros are in with the worst winning percentage of any MLB playoff team in history. Houston survived at 81-81 with one of the worst pitching staffs in the Majors. The Sox stumbled down the stretch but won enough to reach the postseason after losing 324 games combined in the previous three seasons.

American League Teams to Watch

  • The Astros clinched their playoff berth on the final day of the regular season winning the AL West. Despite their .500 record during the regular season, the Astros boast extensive postseason experience making them a dangerous treat.
  • Given their rich history you can never count the Yankees out. New York had the best staff ERA in the majors and the second-best bullpen ERA. They also boast a potent offense even without Aaron Judge. Ben Rice smacked 41 dingers and the Yankees had the second-most home runs in the majors.
  • With their full rebuild ahead of schedule, the White Sox are playing with house money entering the postseason. They feature enough young talented MLB players and explosive power to pull off a road upset in MLB predictions.

Key AL Wild Card Matchups

  • The MLB pick in the Red Sox vs. Yankees series will come down to timely hitting and offensive execution. Both pitching staffs rank among the best in MLB with runs likely to be at a premium. In last year’s Wild Card series the teams combined for 15 total runs in three games playing UNDER the closing total in each game.
  • The White Sox had three players hit more than 30 home runs this season and as a team they were fifth in MLB in long balls. We could see a lot of power in the series with Houston launching the most homers in the majors this season. The difference in MLB predictions is that Houston staff allowed more than 200 homers during the year.

National League Wild Card Series Preview

The senior circuit has its own Wild Card series rematch when the Cubs and Padres tangle. The difference this year is that the teams meet in San Diego where the Padres went 51-31. San Diego was among the best in baseball in the second half going 34-17 over the final two months boosted by a resurgent offense and one of the top bullpens. The Cubs have likely NL MVP Pete Crow-Armstrong, who terrorized San Diego hitting .364 with four homers and 10 RBIs in six games.

There won’t be many surprises in the Phillies-Braves Wild Card series with the teams being familiar division rivals. They’ve also become a familiar postseason matchup meeting for the third time in five years. Atlanta owned the season series winning nine of 13 games and will look to avenge playoff exits by the Phillies in 2002 and 2023. The Phils barely hung on to their playoff spot losing 10 of 15 games before closing the season with a win.

National League Teams to Watch

  • It’s hard to ignore Atlanta in the postseason, though many experts tried in recent weeks. With Milwaukee and LA fighting for the top of the standings for the National League, and four teams in a battle for the three wild card spots, the Braves flew under the radar. A team with a few good starters, a great bullpen and a lineup of home run hitters is a MLB pick to advance.
  • Around the All-Star break it looked like the Padres wouldn’t be in the playoff race. The offense picked up behind Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill and the Pads were among the best in baseball the last few months. They boast a stellar bullpen led by Mason Miller and they were one of five teams to win more than 50 home games.

Key NL Wild Card Matchups

  • The Cubs have a dangerous offense with a MLB-best .765 team OPS and a NL high 220 home runs. Powered by Pete Crow-Armstrong the Cubs averaged 5.25 runs and their lineup can alter a short series. They also dominated San Diego winning five of six games and will look to take advantage of a questionable group of Padres’ starters.
  • After getting into the playoffs on the final day of the season, the Phillies breathed a sigh of relief. Despite their near epic collapse, they have veteran MLB players with postseason experience that had success against the Braves in recent postseasons, knocking them out in both 2022 and 2023.

MLB Players Who Could Decide the Wild Card Series

With runs for the most part being hard to come by in a short series, star offensive MLB players will have a major impact on the outcome of the Wild Card series. Several of baseball’s top power hitters will be on display with the major’s co-home run leaders Kyle Schwarber and Pete Crow-Armstrong leading their teams in the National League. Houston’s Yordan Alvarez nearly won the American League’s triple-crown, leading the league with a .316 average and placing second with 42 homers and 106 RBIs.

Starting Pitchers to Watch

  • Starters will get only one chance holding all the leverage in a short series. The Yankees will trot out AL Cy Young frontrunner Cam Schlittler in Game 1. He went 14-6 with a 1.95 ERA and had success against Boston with a 0.74 ERA in four starts.
  • He won’t win the NL Cy Young Award, but Atlanta’s Chris Sale had another stellar campaign and will take the ball in Tuesday’s opener. Sale went 14-9 with a 2.16 ERA and 0.98 WHIP. He fanned 200 in 162.2 innings.
  • Hunter Brown is a key to Houston’s success. Anchoring a staff heavily impacted by in-season injuries, Brown emerged as the staff ace going 6-4 with a 3.19 ERA in 20 starts. He’ll be tasked with neutralizing a powerful White Sox offense.

Key Hitters in the Wild Card Series

  • The two MVP frontrunners will be competing in the Wild Card series looking to advance their teams. Pete Crow-Armstrong had a historic 40/40 season for the Cubs while posting a massive 10.6 fWAR coupled with elite defense.
  • Yordan Alvarez was the near AL triple-crown winner, leading the league with a .316 average while finishing second in home runs (41) and RBIs (106).
  • Fernando Tatis Jr. and Jackson Merrill were scorching hot in the second half of the season leading San Diego’s offensive turnaround that propelled them to the top wild card.

MLB Predictions for the Wild Card Series

With the higher seeded teams playing all three games in their yard they have a clear advantage. That played out last season with three seeded teams winning their series at home. MLB predictions back San Diego and Atlanta in the National League in part because of their home field dominance. The Yankees have a pitching advantage over Boston giving them a slight edge to advance. Houston is the worst team ever to reach the playoffs and MLB expert picks have the White Sox winning on the road.

AL Wild Card Predictions

  • Anything can happen when the Red Sox and Yankees get together. New York boasts one of the best pitching staffs in baseball and will shorten games with its bullpen leading to a series win.
  • Houston is the only playoff team that posted a losing record at home during the season going 39-42. The pitching staff was ravaged by injuries and finished with one of the worst staff ERAs in baseball at 4.45.

NL Wild Card Predictions

  • Philadelphia limped into the postseason doing everything it could to secure a bid before the last day of the season. The pitching rotation is in shambles after Aaron Nola and Zack Wheeler were used over the weekend. Atlanta coasted into the postseason and will get a quick start to a series win with Chris Sale going in Game 1.
  • San Diego closed as the hottest team in baseball to secure the top wild card spot and hosting rights. That’s a big deal for a team that’s backed by a raucous crowd and went 51-30. After the All-Star break the Padres were 24-5 at Petco Park, an edge that makes them a MLB pick.

MLB Expert Picks and Best Bets

Opening MLB odds for the 2026 Wild Card series heavily back the higher-seeded teams due to their homefield advantage. Every series game will be played in the home park of the higher seed and all four are favored to advance in the high-stakes opening round. MLB expert picks back the AL’s Yankees and Astros as the heaviest favorites on the early board.

Wild Card Series Moneyline and Series Bets

  • The Yankees are getting heavy action on the series moneyline, but analysts see Boston’s bullpen depth and strong rebound from a slow start as a high value threat to drag the series to the limit.
  • Early money has poured in on San Diego with bettors preferring the friendly environment of Petco Park and San Diego’s superior bullpen in a short series.
  • The NL East rivalry between Philadelphia and Atlanta is historically volatile making it difficult for either team to pull off a sweep. This makes backing a 3-game series the safest MLB pick on the board.

Run Lines and Game Totals

  • The opening run lines and game totals for Game 1 of the MLB Wild Card round are up with the standard +/- 1.5 run lines on every game.
  • Game totals are on the low end due to the intense pressure of playoff baseball and every team shortening their staff to secure crucial wins.
  • The opening game of the Cubs-Padres series has a total on the board at 7.5 runs. Petco is historically a pitchers park and with San Diego’s staff depth going against a disciplined Cubs lineup, the UNDER is drawing early support.

MLB Prop Bets for the Wild Card Series

The MLB Wild Card series prop bet menu continues to be built as we speak. As of this writing key narrative-driven player props and situational targets are shaping up. MLB prop bets have centered on key offensive players that can heavily impact a game or series.

Pitcher Prop Bets

  • New York’s Cam Schlittler is a top target in the prop market. With his electric stuff and dominating season, the AL Cy Young favorite faces a strikeout-prone Boston lineup making him a prime target to hit the OVER on his strikeout total.
  • Postseason openers traditionally lean toward tighter, low-scoring innings before bullpens are forced into high leverage situations. Target early pitching stability across the board.

Hitter Prop Bets

  • With Aaron Judge on the shelf, Ben Rice is New York’s primary power source. He clubbed 41 homers with an impressive .897 OPS this season. Facing a right starter at Yankee Stadium makes him a value target to clear the short right-field fence.
  • With his ability to get on base, Atlanta’s Ronald Acuna Jr. is a safe bet to score at least one run against a fatigued Philadelphia pitching staff.
