Mississippi at Oklahoma Odds – Week 9 CFB Picks
For the first time ever the Mississippi Rebels will travel to Norman to face the Oklahoma Sooners in a battle of nationally ranked, one-loss SEC teams. Ole Miss looks to bounce back from its loss much like OU did. Following their Week 7 loss to Texas the Sooners throttled South Carolina, 26-7, last week holding their fourth opponent to 7 points or less. The game is scheduled for Saturday, October 25 at 12 p.m. ET from Memorial Stadium and can be seen on ABC.
Mississippi at Oklahoma Preview
Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin is known more for his innovative approach on offense while playing defense is secondary. That was abundantly clear last week when the Rebels scored enough to beat Georgia but couldn’t get off the field to allow Trinidad Chambliss to score more points. The Rebels are third in the SEC averaging 491.9 total yards and are fourth in scoring.
Keeping the Rebels off the field like Georgia did last week is one way of slowing down the offense. Against a good Dawgs defense Ole Miss scored 35 points in three quarters. They were outscored 17-0 in the final frame and failed to cover the 7.5-point the college football odds. Chambliss scored twice on the ground and had a TD pass.
- Ole Miss has failed to cover in three straight road games and is 1-4 ATS in its last five roadies.
- Kewan Lacy is 3rd in the SEC in rushing and 2nd with 10 rushing TDs.
- The Rebels have converted nearly 52 percent of their third-down plays to rank 4th in the SEC.
- Ole Miss has gone OVER the total in two straight SEC road games and in three of the last four.
If OU gets to the SEC title game and the CFP they will have definitely earned it. Starting with No. 8 Mississippi the Sooners’ next five opponents all enter Week 9 nationally ranked. They are 2-0 against ranked foes this season beating Michigan and Auburn at home and covering the spread on the college football betting line in both.
The Sooners are anchored by an elite defense that leads the nation in fewest yards allowed (213.0) and is second in points per game against (9.4). The group has not allowed more than 23 points in any game and has held four opponents to 7 points or less. Last week the group held South Carolina to 224 total yards, intercepted two passes and recorded six sacks.
- OU is 3rd nationally in opponent third-down conversion rate at 24.8 percent.
- The Sooners are averaging just 18.7 points in their three SEC games.
- OU has scored on all 23 red zone trips with 18 TDs and 5 FGs.
- 14 players have at least one full sack led by R Mason Thomas with 5.5 and the Sooners are tied for 1st in the country averaging 4.0 sacks per game.
Mississippi at Oklahoma Predictions
Backing the OVER in this game is appealing since the Rebels have struggled on the defensive side of the football. With Chambliss behind center the offense showed it can move the ball and score putting up 35 points in three quarters at Georgia last week. While OU’s offense has been muted most of the season, the return of John Mateer should help. Mateer was stymied in his first game back from injury, tossing three picks in a loss to Texas, but he was sharper last week and OU showed signs of a ground game with Trey Blaylock going for 101 yards.
