March Madness Championship 2026: Odds & Preview

The three-week run that is March Madness concludes on Monday night when the Michigan Wolverines and Connecticut Huskies meet for the national championship. UConn is no stranger to the championship picture looking for its third national title in four years. They went back to back in 2023 and 2024.

Both teams could be impacted by injuries with UConn’s Solo Ball nursing a foot injury and Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg dealing with an ankle ailment. Michigan’s annihilation of Arizona in the semifinals positioned them as a 7.5-point favorite on the opening college basketball betting line.

When Is the March Madness Championship Game?

The final game of the college basketball season and the culmination of March Madness actually takes place in April. The first weekend in April has been the primary slot for the Final Four with the title game on Monday. The Saturday-Monday format for the Final Four allows teams that advance to the title tilt a day off in between games to rest and recover. Avoiding a crowded Sunday of sports also allows for maximum television exposure.

Championship Game Date and Tip-Off Time

Since 1973 the national championship game has been played on Monday. This year the game is scheduled for April 5 with tipoff to take place at 8:50 p.m. ET.

How Teams Advance to the Championship Game

Five wins in the 64-team, single-elimination March Madness field gets you to the title game. A sixth win earns you the title. A team from the First Four has never reached the championship game, but they would have one additional contest to navigate. Michigan reached the title game by beating Arizona 91-73 in the semifinals. UConn got past Illinois 71-62.

Where Is the March Madness Championship Game Played?

For the ninth time the city of Indianapolis, IN will host the NCAA men’s basketball national championship game. The game will be played at Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. The Final Four is scheduled to return to Indianapolis in 2029.

2026 Men’s March Madness Championship Game Preview

For most of the season there was an argument for whether Michigan or Arizona had the best frontcourt in the country. That dispute was settled in the semifinals with Michigan dominating in a 91-73 win.

And they did it without much help from Big Ten Player of the Year Yaxel Lendeborg. Moving forward the question is can Lendeborg play at a high level after exiting the Arizona game in the first half with a knee sprain and ankle injury?

He did return for the second half on Saturday hitting a few 3-pointers, but the team chemistry and betting odds will be impacted if Lendeborg is on the shelf or not close to 100 percent. The Wolverines are more than just Lendeborg, though.

Aday Mara was devastating with 26 points and 9 rebounds. The Wolverines have the size, they can shoot the basketball and they play stifling defense.

UConn has the advantage of experiencing the title game with this their third in the last four years. They also haven’t lost in those trips, so there’s something about the Huskies in the title game. The Huskies got past Illinois in the semifinals despite second leading scorer Alex Karaban having an off night.

He was just 1 of 8 from the field with 9 points. UConn’s best players were at their best against the Illini and they’ll have to be even better on Monday.

Tarris Reed, Braylon Mullins and Solo Ball all scored in double figures and the Huskies defense locked down holding Illinois to 20 points below its season average in the 71-62 win. “We’re a tough program; we’re a group of fighters. We’ve got incredible will.

We go into these games, were ready for battle,” said coach Dan Hurley. Ball’s injury could be a problem for the underdog Huskies, but like Lendeborg he played after allegedly sustaining the injury.

Michigan’s Tournament Journey

The Wolverines reached the championship game behind an offense that set a record by scoring at least 90 points in five straight tournament games. They won every game by at least 13 points including a 33-point blowout of Tennessee in the Elite Eight. The most impressive win was over Arizona in the Final Four, beating a team that was ranked No. 1 for a majority of the season.

Connecticut’s Tournament Journey

UConn’s road was a little bumpier with the last 3 games decided by a single digit. Braylon Mullins hit the game-winning shot to beat Duke 73-72 in the Elite Eight. He also had 3 of UConn’s program record 12 triples in the Illinois game. Tarris Reed Jr. Had 31 points and 27 rebounds against Furman in the first round.

Key Players to Watch

The obvious answer is the injured players Lendeborg and Ball. Both players mean so much to their squad, but they are just a piece of the puzzle. Lendeborg hit some key 3-pointers against Arizona after returning to the court, but he was hobbled. He stated on Sunday that he will “absolutely” play in the title game.

Ball was seen in a walking boot after the semifinal win over Illinois, but if he can move without it you have to think he’ll play. One of three players averaging double figures this season, having Ball on the floor is a big deal to offset Michigan’s offensive supremacy.

2026 March Madness Championship Game Odds and Betting Outlook

March Madness championship game odds opened with Michigan a 6.5 to 7.5-point favorite. The Wolverines have had a historic run through the tournament as the first team to score at least 90 points in five straight outings. They also won every game by double digits with payouts in the last four.

UConn has never lost a national championship game going 6-0 all-time. They went back to back just a few years ago, covering the line in wins over San Diego State (2023) and Purdue (2024). The Huskies are on their own heater with payouts in each of their last four games.

Current Championship Game Betting Lines

  • As of Sunday afternoon Michigan was listed as a 7.5-point favorite.
  • The Wolverines have a moneyline price of -310. UConn is listed at +263 on the moneyline.
  • The total hit the board at 144.5, which would be the lowest in any Michigan game this season.

Key Betting Trends for the Championship Game

Since the 2000 season the betting favorite in the national championship game is 19-6 SU and 17-8 ATS. In that same span, favorites of 3 or more points are 14-2 SU and 12-4 ATS.

UConn is on an unreal run in March Madness going 18-1 SU and ATS in its last 19 tournament games.

Michigan likes to play with pace and has enjoyed plenty of success with that style. They better not get frustrated against one of the slowest paced teams in the country, something that’s already happened. UM is 0-2 in matchups with 63 possessions or fewer. The Huskies have played 13 such games.

March Madness Championship Game 2026 Predictions

It’s hard to bet against UConn and its championship game and NCAA Tournament pedigree. They just play to win and have done plenty of it over the last several years. But Michigan is a team that can adjust to any style and can take over games with their presence down low.

With Lendeborg exiting the semifinal game in the first half with an injury, Aday Mara took over scoring 26 points on 11 of 16 shooting with 9 rebounds. He got help from his backcourt with Trey McKenney scoring 16 points and Elliot Cadeau getting a 13-point, 10-assist double-double.

Lendeborg has vowed to play and even at less than 100 percent he’s a threat on the floor making Michigan a strong pick to cover in my March Madness championship game prediction.
