June 11 World Cup 2026 Predictions in the Group Stage

June 11 World Cup 2026 Predictions in the Group Stage

The FIFA World Cup 2026 group stage officially kicks off on Thursday, June 11 with a pair of matches. Widely predicted to win Group A, tournament co-host Mexico opens as a big favorite against the lowest ranked team in the group South Africa. This isn’t the strongest team Mexico has sent to a World Cup, but playing on home soil in a group where it is clearly the best team gives Mexico a head start.

The second match of the day also takes place in Mexico with South Korea taking on Czechia. With tournament co-host Mexico a heavy favorite to win the group, this matchup will go a long way toward determining the second automatic qualifier to the knockout stage from the group. World Cup odds suggest a tight match and a close race for second place.

World Cup 2026 Group Matches Today

Fans and bettors will ease into World Cup action with two matches on the first two days of the tournament. It all starts on Thursday, June 11 with Mexico hosting both Group A contests. Every matchday for the remainder of the group stage will feature at least four games.

With North America hosting it makes sense to have Mexico up first. Estadio Azteca will become the first venue to host the opening match in three different World Cups when El Tri takes on South Africa at 3 p.m. ET. According to statistical models Mexico has a 65-68 percent chance of winning.

The second match is scheduled to start at 10 p.m. ET and is expected to be much closer. Those same statistical models give South Korea a 36 percent chance of winning with Czechia at 33 percent. A draw is also in play with an implied probability of 31 percent.

Today’s World Cup Groups Odds

  • Ahead of the tournament Mexico is the clear World Cup betting favorite to win Group A with World Cup group odds hovering around -120 for an implied probability of around 53-55 percent. The fight for second place between Czechia and South Korea is tight with oddsmakers evenly split between which country finishes second.
  • There will be some separation on the odds board if either Czechia or South Korea win the opening match with one club getting a leg up on their competition. Current odds favor Mexico and South Korea advancing as the top two teams in the group.
  • The clear long shot is South Africa with odds as high as +1500 to win the group. With nothing to lose you can expect the club to play free and loose.

Match 1 Prediction and Betting Preview

A run of strong form leading up to the World Cup has positioned Mexico as a big favorite to beat South Africa in the opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Mexico hasn’t lost in eight matches so far in 2026 most recently routing Serbia in an international friendly.

Mexico’s lock down defense will present a lot of problems for their offensively-challenged opponent. Allowing just two goals during their 8-game unbeaten streak, Mexico uses the strong play of center backs Johan Vasquez and Cesar Montes to disrupt opponent attacks.

Regular starting goalkeeper Luis Malagon was ruled out of the tournament with an Achilles injury leaving the starting job Raul Rangel. It probably won’t matter much since the players in front of the goalie are adept at preventing opponent scoring opportunities.

Not only do the Mexicans have a more talented roster, they also have the advantage of playing in their home venue at an altitude the South Africans aren’t used to playing at. Mexico boasts an impressive record at Estadio Azteca over the years partly due to the elevation. Mexico City is approximately 7,350 feet above sea level leaving opposing teams gasping for air.

Match 2 Prediction and Betting Preview

The first game of an international tournament between teams as closely matched as South Korea and Czechia is going to be tightly played and more than likely close. Both teams have aspirations of competing with Mexico for the top spot in the group and are also looking to advance to the Round of 32.

The Koreans have a lot of confidence entering the tournament following an unbeaten run through qualifying. They play a disciplined game on the back end, limiting opponent scoring chances. They have to because they aren’t a gifted offensive team. Over their last six matches at least one team failed to score.

Under the previous 32-team format the Czechs likely don’t qualify. They survived some anxious moments in the qualifying round leaning on the play of Patrik Schick and Tomas Soucek. I do like South Korea’s superior talent up front against an aging and vulnerable Czech defense.

Best World Cup Betting Angles for Today

  • With only two matches on the first day and co-host Mexico competing in one of them, the focus should be on the home country squad. The combination of high elevation and dominant record in home matches leaves Mexico as a moneyline bet in World Cup group odds.
  • The price is steep so pairing that with UNDER 2.5 goals increases the value of the wager.
  • I can’t see Czechia or South Korea taking too many risks in their matchup, as they are evenly matched teams with both having strong defensive structure while also trying to avoid a loss in a critical game that has UNDER 2.5 goals all over it.
  • Prime is offering Same Game Parlays for soccer that gives bettors the option of combining multiple selections from one game into a single wager. The choices could include match results, totals, player props and more.

How Group Standings Affect Today’s Predictions

Being the first match of the World Cup group stage and the first of the entire tournament, the standings will have zero impact on how the games are played. Of course every team wants to win their match so they are at the top of the standings and not at the bottom.

Daily World Cup Prediction Summary

I like Mexico’s chances of winning the group given their balanced roster and homefield advantage in a foursome that lacks an elite team. Raul Jimenez had a terrific qualifying and the emergence of young Gilberto Mora has just added to the teams balance and depth.

Like most fans I want to see a match winner in regulation time. There is no extra time in group stage games and Czechia and South Korea are poised to finish in a draw. As close as the teams are on the odds board it almost seems inevitable.
