PSG vs. Chelsea Match Preview
Get ready for a pair of European heavyweights on American soil in a highly anticipated FIFA Club World Cup final match. Coming off a Champions League victory and showcasing an abundance of skill on both ends of the pitch, PSG entered the tournament as the overall favorite. They haven’t disappointed, outscoring opponents 16-1 in the competition. The only goal allowed came in a 1-0 loss to Brazil’s Botafogo in group play. They’ve outscored teams 10-0 in the knockout stage, including an impressive 4-0 decision over five-time champion Real Madrid in the semifinals. Fabian scored the first of his two goals just six minutes into the match and Ousmane Dembele added a marker in the 10th minute starting the rout.
One of the top strikers in the world, Dembele missed the entire group stage with an injury and saw only substitute duty in earlier knockout round matches. His presence was felt immediately against Real Madrid assisting on Fabian’s first tally and adding his own a few minutes later. Gianluigi Donnarumma has been the backbone of the defense with five clean sheets in the tournament. He made a total of 10 saves in knockout stage shutout wins over Inter Miami, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.
The road has been a bit bumpier for Chelsea, who also went 2-1 in the group stage with shutout wins over Los Angeles FC and Esperance de Tunis. The lone setback was 3-1 to Flamengo. Their Round of 16 match was a heart-stopper. Benfica tallied the game-tying goal in second half stoppage time sending the match into overtime. Chelsea could have folded but instead got goals from Christopher Nkunku, Pedro Neto and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to advance with a 4-1 triumph. In their semifinal win over Fluminense Joao Pedro was the star banking both goals in a 2-nil win. Recently purchased from Brighton, Pedro made just his second appearance with the club in that match.
PSG vs. Chelsea Head-to-Head and Key Stats
The clubs haven’t faced each other since the last 16 of the Champions League in 2016 with PSG winning both by identical 2-1 scores. Three matches in 2015 all ended in a draw. The biggest stat is PSG’s goal differential of +15. They tallied multiple goals in five of their six matches and allowed just one goal the entire tournament. They have no weaknesses and attack from all directions with precision passing that’s allowed them to dominate possession time. In the semifinal win over Real Madrid they had a possession rate of 68 percent. Four players have tallied at least two goals in the tournament led by three markers from Fabian. Achraf Hakimi, Joao Neves and Dembele each have two goals.
PSG vs. Chelsea Betting Tips
There was some concern over PSG’s back end with defenders Willian Pacho and Lucas Hernandez out due to suspension for the semifinal match. It wasn’t a factor in the shoutout with PSG holding a massive advantage in possession time. The pair is again sidelined fulfilling their two-game suspensions. Chelsea has appeared to make steady improvements over the course of the tournament, but their run to the final has arguably been much easier.
PSG vs. Chelsea Prediction
Given their depth and talent it’s hard to go against PSG in this match. The return of Dembele only adds to the offensive punch and Donnarumma has stood tall in goal. Chelsea will have to play a near perfect match and catch some breaks along the way to pull off the upset, and I don’t see that happening. Both teams have talent at forward with plenty of scoring options and I can see this going OVER the 2.5 goal total.
