There is a lot of brand recognition in the East Region with the likes of UCLA, Duke and UConn, three of the five teams with the most March Madness titles. Toss in Kansas, Michigan State, St. John’s and Louisville for a star-studded cast. However, Duke is the overwhelming March Madness betting favorite to win the East and advance to its second straight Final Four.
The Blue Devils bested Michigan in late February to take over as the No. 1 ranked team in the country. They closed the season with 11 straight wins, including a couple of nail-biters in the ACC tournament, to earn the No. 1 overall seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Dookies reached the Final Four twice in the last four seasons but haven’t won a title since 2015.
Duke’s Cameron Boozer is a national player of the year candidate and a NBA lottery pick. But Kansas’ Darryn Peterson is the projected No. 1 overall pick and when he’s healthy he makes the Jayhawks a team to watch. The region is stacked and the team that advances will have several high-pressure wins under its belt.
East Region Preview
- Duke passed a stiff test at the ACC tournament with injured players Patrick Ngongba and Caleb Foster on the bench with walking boots on. Not known for their depth the roster was depleted, yet the Dookies put together three straight wins to capture another ACC title. Cameron Boozer was his destructive self and twin Cayden came up large in meaningful minutes.
- The Blue Devils had their worst game defensively in some time allowing 79 points in their opening win over Florida State. Whatever FSU did worked and opponents will take note. The Noles averaged 83 points in 2 games, 30 points more than Duke's average points per game allowed.
- Many observers believed St. John’s got a lack of respect for its No. 5 seed in the region. The Big East regular season and tournament champs are 28-6 with their only loss since early January a blowout to UConn on Feb. 25. The Johnnies got their revenge, though, with a 72-52 rout of the Huskies in the Big East championship.
- Despite a terrible loss to Houston in the Big 12 tournament and 5 losses in their last 9 games, Kansas is a legitimate threat at Tournament time. Darryn Peterson can carry a team when he’s on the floor and Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year Flory Bidunga anchors a defense ranked in the top 10 in efficiency.
- Michigan State is flying under the radar in the stacked region, and that’s just the way Tom Izzo likes it. The Spartans aren’t elite; rather they are just really good at both ends of the floor, ranking among the top 25 nationally in offensive efficiency and among the top 15 in defensive efficiency. A lot depends on what Big Ten assist leader Jeremy Fears does.
- There are some good teams in the middle of the East pack, but being good isn’t going to get the job done in a loaded field. If the bracket holds true Louisville for instance would have to beat Michigan State, UConn and Duke to win the region.
East Region Predictions
- Whichever team escapes the region will certainly have earned it. Duke is favored to win the national championship even with a few key players questionable to play in the early rounds. Cam Boozer is that good and so is the defense. Imagine what happens if Ngongba and Foster return and are healthy.
- Several teams have something to prove entering the Tournament. Kansas struggled down the stretch going 4-5 with a humbling loss to Houston in the Big 12 tournament. St. John’s wants to prove it deserved a higher seed. Of course UCLA has the most Tournament titles with 11, but none since 1995. And all the lower seeds would like nothing better than to notch an upset win in their belt.
East Region Betting Tips
- Duke’s injuries leave them vulnerable against top flight teams but they will have more time to heal since Siena can’t match up. Duke opened as a 27.5-point favorite in March Madness betting odds. The Dookies went 4-3 ATS during the season when favored by at least that many points.
- Both Kansas and St. John’s are considered high-value sleeper picks. The Jayhawks beat Arizona, Iowa State and Houston during the year showing they can hang with the best. And if Peterson shows up they’re a tough out.
