The Xavier Musketeers take a 5-game winning streak into their Big East opener against the Creighton Bluejays. With two national championships in three years UConn is the measuring stick in the conference, but these teams should be in the chase all season.

In 12 seasons since joining the Big East the Bluejays reached 20 wins 11 times. They are struggling out of the gate this year, though, losing their last two games to fall to 5-5. The good news is that they’ve never been below .500, but they have a challenge ahead to prevent that from happening.

Public Betting Odds Factors

Creighton has beaten the teams it should beat but had difficulty against the strong teams on their schedule. They lost by 27 to Gonzaga and by 18 to Iowa State in their only games against ranked opponents. They also lost by 21 points to unbeaten and soon-to-be-ranked Nebraska.

Highly-touted transfer Owen Freeman has yet to make his presence felt for Creighton. Freeman averaged 16.7 points and 6.7 boards last year at Iowa but is at just 8.5 points and 5.2 rebounds this year. He’s also averaging 10 minutes less per game.

The Bluejays typically boast a squad that can shoot the basketball. However, it’s been a different story this season with the team 8th in the Big East with a 44.2 field goal percentage.

More inclined to play at a slower pace, the Bluejays have played UNDER the closing total on the college basketball pointspread in their last two games and in 8 of their 10 games overall.

Since losing by a point to a good Georgia team last month, the Musketeers have been on fire. They won their last five games going 4-1 ATS with four of the victories by double figures improving to 8-3 on the season.

Leading scorer Tre Carroll leads four players averaging in double figures with 16.9 points and has scored at least 11 points in every game. He erupted for a season-high 30 points making 14 of 23 field goals in a 79-74 win over Cincinnati earlier this month.

The Musketeers are efficient on offense but they do have a weakness that could cause problems in close games. As a team they shoot just 67.6 percent from the free throw line with their two leading scorers Carroll and Jovan Milicevic below 66 percent.

The 3-point shot has been a weapon for the Musketeers, who were 12 of 30 from behind the arc in their most recent game, making at least 10 triples for the seventh time this season. They are 2nd in the Big East in 3-point attempts and 3-point field goal percentage.

Creighton has balance with six players averaging more than 8 points per game, but they don’t have a volume scorer with Josh Dix leading the way with 12.3 points per game. Xavier will focus its defense on Dix and Blake Harper and limiting their production will be enough for the Musketeers to get the cover.
