Champions League Semifinals: Odds, Preview & Insights

Paris Saint-Germain moved one step closer to a repeat reaching the semifinal round of the UEFA Champions League for a third consecutive season beating Liverpool 4-0 on in the quarterfinals. PSG has gone undefeated in the knockout stage winning five matches with a draw.

Despite their recent success PSG is third on the Champions League odds to win a second straight title. PSG and Bayern Munich, the favorite to win a seventh Champions League title, square off in one semifinal, which is a rematch from the 2020 title match.

The favorite at the start of the tournament to win its first Champions League, Arsenal has dropped behind Munich on the odds board. Arsenal has some other worries as well with their lead in the Premier League standings evaporating. Consecutive losses dropped Arsenal out of first place for the first time in over 200 days.

Looking to take advantage of Arsenal’s poor form is Atletico Madrid, which advanced by upsetting Barcelona in the quarterfinals. Atletico survived a 2-1 loss in the second leg but won on aggregate after a 2-0 success in the first leg. Atletico has scored 17 goals in its six knockout stage victories.

Public Betting Odds Factors

  • Betting markets expand for prestigious international competitions and those not familiar should stick to the simplest wagers. Moneyline picks are the easiest, but backing the right team isn’t always as easy as going with a name brand.
  • Form is crucial in soccer betting. Recent results for a certain club say more than its star power. Even the best clubs like Arsenal can underperform when confidence is low and pitch strategy is undecided.
  • Bayern Munich is the hottest team entering the semifinals having won all four knockout stage matches by outscoring Real Madrid and Atalanta 16-6. Atletico Madrid is the only one of the four to lose a knockout stage match, doing it twice.
  • Atletico lost the second leg of its quarterfinal match with Barcelona but held on for the 3-2 aggregate. Atletico also lost the second leg of its Round of 16 series with Tottenham, but won 7-5 on aggregate.
  • PSG and Atletico both advanced through the knockout stage playoffs and have played two more Champions League matches than their semifinal opponents.
  • Though they’ve had some distractions with recent losses in the Premier League, Arsenal has been the most dominant team in the Champions League having not lost a match. They have 10 wins and two draws in 12 UCL games.
  • Arsenal has tightened the screws defensively allowing just five goals in 12 matches with eight clean sheets. They’ve allowed just one marker in the knockout stage and enter the semifinals with a streak of three consecutive shutouts.
  • Bayern Munich and PSG have scored the most goals in the tournament with 38, but Bayern has played two fewer matches. Both Bayern and PSG have scored multiple goals in every knockout stage match.
  • The top remaining goal scorer in the Champions League is ready to make a run for the Golden Boot award. Bayern’s Harry Kane has tallied a marker in five straight games topping the 50-goal mark for his UCL career. He’s also three goals behind tournament leader Kylian Mbappe.
  • Injuries are a deciding factor in any sporting event and more so in the Champions League. With clubs playing between Champions League matches there is always the possibility of a key player pulling up lame. Smart bettors check official injury reports, follow reliable sources for updates and avoid committing to a wager too early.
  • The first leg result is the most significant factor in specific match odds. Historically the home team wins 70 percent of the time heavily influencing odds for teams that need a comeback or for teams that won the first leg by a wide margin.

Champions League Semifinals Match Preview

The last of Bayern’s six Champions League titles came in 2020 with a 1-0 win over PSG in the final match. Another title moves Bayern into a tie with Milan for the second-most titles in UCL history. PSG won its first Champions League last year and is playing in the semifinals for a third straight year.

Arsenal and Atletico Madrid are each looking for their first Champions League title. Between them they are 0-4 in the title match. Arsenal is back in the semifinals after falling to PSG 3-1 on aggregate last year. Atletico last reached the semifinal round in 2016.

Semifinal 1 Preview

With 38 goals apiece this matchup features the two highest scoring teams in the tournament. PSG picked up its game in the knockout stage, especially offensively, scoring 16 goals while pitching three straight shutouts. Their elite possession game will be critical to keep the ball away from Bayern’s offense.

Though not as stout defensively, Bayern has been just as good as PSG on the attack. Led by Harry Kane, who has a goal in five straight matches and 12 total in this competition, Bayern averages nearly 3.2 goals scoring at least four times in three of their four knockout stage matches. They also recently set a new Bundesliga record for goals.

Semifinal 2 Preview

Arsenal reached consecutive semifinals for the first time behind an almost impenetrable defense that has conceded just five goals in 12 matches. They will have to recover from a letdown in their EPL play and find more consistency on offense. While they’ve been elite defending, Arsenal’s offense has gone into a slumber scoring just four times in their last six competitions.

Atletico is the unlikeliest team to be playing in the semifinals. They won just seven of their 14 Champions League matches with a pair of draws and they have the worst goal differential at plus-8. The other three teams are +21 or better. They are versatile and deep, though, making life tough for opponents. Atletico converts chances at a high rate and 12 different players have scored, providing a test for an elite defense.

Champions League Semifinals Predictions

Their battle with Manchester City at the top of the Premier League standings will take some focus away from Arsenal paving the way for an Atletico upset. The club has had a revival under Diego Simeone with their combative style frustrating opponents. A deep roster with several players having the ability to score can fluster Arsenal’s defensive structure.

We don’t usually see teams score in bunches the way PSG and Bayern have during this competition. I do believe PSG’s ability to maintain possession of the ball will frustrate Bayern leading to critical mistakes. A team that thrives on its scoring prowess also gives up some defensive structure which can be exploited by arguably the best midfielder and fullbacks in the world.

Champions League Semifinal Betting Tips

Bayern surpassed Arsenal as the Champions League betting odds favorite to win its first title since 2020 and seventh overall. However, the odds depict some uncertainty with no clear-cut favorite among the semifinalists. Below are the Champions League title odds entering the semifinal round of the competition.

  • Bayern Munich +175
  • Arsenal +210
  • Paris Saint-Germain +280
  • Atletico Madrid +700

Beyond the outright Champions League winner there are popular semifinal bets, including Both Teams to Score (BTTS) and handicap betting. Experts predict a high-scoring affair between PSG and Bayern, and why wouldn’t they? The clubs have scored seemingly at will topping the Champions League with 38 goals each.

Success at the betting window isn’t good luck; rather it comes from preparation in understanding recent form, monitoring club updates and analyzing movement in odds. Be sure to read this informative guide to better understand the intricacies of wagering on soccer matches.

Player prop bets focus heavily on the tournament goal scoring leader and anytime goal scorers. With Madrid eliminated, Kylian Mbappe finishes with 15 goals. He still leads all players, but Harry Kane is making a run. Kane tallied in each of his last five matches and is only three behind the leader.
