Celtics at Cavaliers Preview, Odds & Betting Tips

A huge matchup between two of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference hits the hardwood on Sunday. The Celtics were expected to compete for a playoff berth before the season, but I don’t think anyone had them in the race for the top seed.

After winning the East’s No. 1 seed last season more of the same was expected from the Cavs. They haven’t been nearly as good but they’ve proven to be a contender after beating conference-leading Detroit on Monday.

Celtics at Cavaliers Preview

East heavyweights the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers conclude their season series on Sunday, March 8, 2026 at Rocket Arena in Cleveland. The first game of an ABC doubleheader tips off at 1 p.m. ET.

Public Betting Odds Factors

  • Entering the season with a revamped roster and without perennial MVP candidate Jayson Tatum, the Celtics had bloated NBA championship odds and few expectations. But through 61 games they boast the 4th best record in the Association and trail Detroit by a handful of games for place in the East. And their futures odds are now among the 5 shortest in the league.
  • There has been talk recently of a possible Tatum return, which would only bolster Boston’s championship hopes. Tatum hasn’t played all season as he continues his recovery from an Achilles injury.
  • The Celtics have done just fine without him winning 3 straight and 12 of their last 14 games following Monday’s 108-81 win over Milwaukee. And they’ve been on a heater with 11 payouts on the NBA spread in that span.
  • The win over Milwaukee was more impressive since Jaylen Brown didn’t play due to an illness. In Tatum’s absence Brown has picked up the pace averaging 29 points and shooting better than 48 percent from the field while averaging more than 34 minutes of run time.
  • The Cavs survived a difficult 6-game stretch where they played Detroit twice, OKC and the Knicks. They split games with the East leading Pistons, beat New York and lost at OKC. What prevented a winning stretch was a 2-point loss at Milwaukee making a 3-3 record worse than it actually was.
  • A 113-109 win over Detroit capped the run of games giving the Cavs a 2-game winning streak heading into an extended break. The Cavs get 4 full days off before entertaining Boston on Sunday.  Over the past 3 seasons when having a break of at least 4 days the Cavs are 8-3,

Celtics at Cavaliers Predictions

  • Something has to give in this game. The Celtics have the best scoring defense in the NBA allowing just 107 points a game. And they’ve been locked in lately holding 9 of their last 14 opponents to 100 points or less.
  • The addition of James Harden at the trade deadline has boosted Cleveland’s offensive efficiency and with Donovan Mitchell averaging 28.5 points the Cavs are the third-highest scoring team in the league. In 9 games since being acquired Harden is averaging 19.1 points and 8 assists per game.

Celtics at Cavaliers Betting Tips

  • Boston has won 7 of 8 games with the only loss in that time to Denver when they played the second of a back to back and 3rd game in 4 nights at altitude.
  • The 7 wins were by an average of 21.1 points with all of them having a double digit margin. The Cs cashed the UNDER in 5 of the last 6 games.
  • The Cavs have won their last 7 home games with payouts in each of the last 6.
  • With Harden in the lineup the Cavs are 8-1 SU and 5-4 ATS.

Celtics at Cavaliers Head to Head and Key Stats

  • Boston won the first 2 meetings this season covering the NBA betting line in both games. Payton Pritchard scored 42 points and Jaylen Brown had a triple double in Boston’s 117-115 triumph in the most recent game.
  • The Celtics have won 8 of the past 11 games, including a 5-game win in the 2023-24 playoffs.
  • The teams have cashed the UNDER in 2 straight and 4 of the last 5 matchups.
