Betting Preview: FedEx St. Jude Championship
The first leg of the FedExCup playoffs takes place this week with the top 70 players in the season-long standings earning a spot in the field for the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Like in any sport the stakes are higher in the playoffs with the top 50 in the standings following this tournament advancing. While some players will attempt to climb up the standings one that doesn’t have to worry is Scottie Scheffler. The most dominant golfer in the game today, Scheffler enters as the points leader and is the No. 1 ranked player in the world. He returns to action looking to become the first player to win back-to-back FedExCup trophies. Scheffler captured his second major championship of the season and fourth title overall winning The Open by four swings. Though he’s never won this tournament in five starts, Scheffler opened as a prohibitive favorite ahead of Xander Schauffele on the outright PGA betting odds.
FedEx St. Jude Championship Overview
The 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship, the first of three playoff tournaments to determine the season’s FedExCup winner, will be contested at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tenn. from August 7 through August 10. Hosting PGA events since 1989, Southwind entertains the world’s best golfers for a fourth consecutive year. At just under 7,300 yards and par 70, the course is demanding with water prevalent on a number of holes, strategically placed bunkers and long, narrow fairways. Last year Hideki Matsuyama blew a five-shot lead in the final round but birdied the final two holes for a 2-shot win over Schauffele and Viktor Hovland ending a tournament run of three straight playoff finishes. There is a close race for the final spots in the standings entering this week with players like Wyndham Clark, Min Woo Lee, J.T. Poston, Kurt Kitayama and Bud Cauley needing a strong showing to advance. Those golfers caught a break when world No. 2 Rory McIlroy elected not to compete. The 2025 FedEx St. Jude Championship will be televised on NBC, Golf Channel and ESPN+.

FedEx St. Jude Championship Top Contenders
Ludvig Aberg +2766
After bursting onto the scene in late 2023 there hasn’t been a lot of noise surrounding Aberg. It’s not because he suddenly became a bad golfer, rather other events hit the news cycle. He’s had a solid year with a win at the Genesis Invitational in February among six top 10s and he’s performed will in his last two starts with a T8 at the Scottish Open and T23 at The Open. His game is well-suited for the Southwind layout giving him value.
Harris English +4826
Few golfers have been hotter than English over the last few months making him worth a look. And at his price there isn’t much to lose. Harris was second at The Open, his second runner-up and fifth top 25 in his last seven starts. He also has fond memories of this course winning his first PGA Tour title at TPC Southwind in 2013 while racking up another two top 10s.
Matt Fitzpatrick +2956
Fitzpatrick is another golfer entering on a nice run of form with two T8s and a pair of T4s in his last four starts. Prior to that run Fitz was T17 at the Travelers and went an impressive 22 straight rounds shooting par or better. His lone Tour win was more than two years ago, but Fitz is accustomed to winning, as he won eight titles on the DP World Tour during his career. Toss in a trio of top 6 finishes at Southwind and Fitz is a strong candidate.
Scottie Scheffler +340
How can you not back the best player in the universe in a shrunken field? His price isn’t the best but Scheffler is with half of his last eight starts ending with him atop the leaderboard. He also has a current run of 11 straight top 10 showings. He’s also gotten progressively better in this event going for a solo fourth in last year’s edition.

Even without McIlroy the field is loaded and I wouldn’t be surprised to see someone like Jordan Spieth make a move. It’s hard to be against Scheffler, who is contending every time he plays and is winning a lot. However, in terms of value I like the runs English and Fitzpatrick are currently on and value is important in sports betting.
