An AL West matchup features the battle of Texas on Saturday, September 6 when the Houston Astros visit the surging Texas Rangers. The Rangers have climbed into playoff contention and look to stay hot against their in-state rival. A good pitching duel is in the works with Hunter Brown set to face Jacob deGrom. The game will be televised on FOX with first pitch from Globe Life Field in Arlington set for 7:15 p.m. ET.

With the division leading Astros slumping the AL West has become tight with Seattle and the Rangers creeping up the standings. A loss to the Yankees on Tuesday put the Astros at just 7-9 over a 16-game span. Offense has been a huge concern over that stretch with the Astros getting shutout four times and scoring two runs or less in 10 games. That includes three wins over the Orioles where the Astros scored 26 runs.

While the offense has been ineffective the pitching remains solid with Saturday’s probable Hunter Brown displaying ace stuff. Despite his 10-7 record Brown boasts the third-lowest ERA in baseball at 2.34 and has allowed 114 hits with 182 strikeouts over 161.2 innings. He hasn’t received much run support with the club scoring a total of one run in his last three starts.

Brown has pitched at least 6.0 innings in 19 of 27 starts.
In seven games since returning to the lineup on Aug. 26, Yordan Alvarez is hitting .333 with a home run and four RBIs.

Making a late charge the Rangers are putting pressure on the teams ahead of them in the AL West and in the wild card race. Winning six in a row and nine of 10 moved Texas within 4.5 games of the Astros and within 1.5 games of Seattle for the third wild card. The streak ended on Tuesday with a 5-3 loss to Arizona.

Texas has the best home record of any team not currently in a playoff spot winning 61 percent of their games at Globe Life Field. The Rangers won five of six games on their most recent homestand outscoring the Angels and Guardians 46-13. The Rangers boast the lowest staff ERA (3.45) and WHIP (1.17) in MLB.

Former Cy Young Award winner deGrom has been a key figure on the bump going 11-6 with a 2.69 ERA and 0.92 WHIP in 26 starts.

With two studs on the hill you have to figure runs will be hard to come by. In two starts this year against Houston deGrom has allowed two runs and nine hits over 14.0 innings. And his splits are even better at home with his ERA a run lower. In a road start against the Rangers in May when he faced deGrom, Brown allowed just three hits in 8.0 frames but was saddled with the 1-0 loss on Jake Burger’s sixth inning homer.
