After finishing as the national runner-up last season, the Miami Hurricanes restocked their roster and are positioned as the clear favorite with negative odds to win the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2026. The Canes got hot at the right time last season winning their last four regular season games, but still didn’t qualify for the ACC title game, losing a five-team tie-breaker for second place.

Miami reached the CFP as an at-large team winning three games before bowing to Indiana. The Canes have never won a league championship after missing out on the title game last season in a five-team tiebreaker for second place. Nearly every expert has the Canes at the top of their ACC football predictions. Louisville and SMU are the next closest on the ACC futures odds but well behind on the board.

Who Can Win the ACC Championship?

The Miami Hurricanes are the clear, heavy favorites to win the ACC title in 2026 entering the season with negative odds. However, like last season proved, anything can happen. The Canes lost out in a five-team tiebreaker for second place and didn’t even reach the ACC Championship. Instead Duke got the spot and upset Virginia to win the title after finishing the regular season with a 7-5 record.

The path to the 2026 ACC Championship has been altered in an attempt to avoid the chaos from last year. The league is transitioning to a 9-game conference slate but five schools will only play eight league games this year due to scheduling conflicts. Also, to avoid another wild tiebreak scenario, a new team ranking system will be utilized to ensure the true top two teams advance to the ACC Championship in December.

Why Certain Teams Enter as Favorites

• Teams that enter the season as favorites to win the ACC either return a huge chunk of production from the previous season or successfully rebuild through the transfer portal. Scheduling and coaching stability are also factors.
• Miami raided an ACC rival, signing Duke transfer quarterback Darian Mensah to lead an offense that already boasts elite skill players. Louisville added former Ohio State QB Lincoln Kienholz.
• With Kevin Jennings back SMU might have the most stable QB situation in the ACC helping them to the third-best odds. An experienced player directing a potent offense gives the Mustangs an edge over teams breaking in new starters.

What Could Open the Door for a New Champion

• With the ACC in a transition year 12 schools will play nine conference games and five will play eight. The imbalance means a team could finish with fewer ACC losses just by volume.
• The uneven schedule also forces a change to the tiebreak system. The new system is untested and could allow a dark horse to emerge with blowout wins over lesser opponents impacting its analytical ranking.

Miami’s run to the National Championship game and an impressive offseason transfer haul has them billed as the top ACC championship contender. However, there are a handful of teams that possess the talent and coaching to finish among the top two putting them in the ACC championship prediction race. Louisville and SMU are next in line behind Miami, and although their odds have lengthened compared to previous years, Clemson can never be counted out.

Returning Power Programs

• Possessing the most talented roster in the ACC, Miami is the definitive team to beat. Last year’s national runner-up added Darian Mensah to a loaded offense and the Canes have a top ranked defense. Miami is expected to capture its first ever ACC title.
• A three-game losing streak near the end of last season torpedoed Louisville’s season. They still finished 9-4 and had one of the nation’s top ranked transfer portal classes. They have a new defensive coordinator but retained much of the talent from last year’s No. 2 total defense.
• Along with Louisville, SMU is considered the biggest threat to Miami. Kevin Jennings is back leading an offense that ranked among the top 5 in the ACC in scoring and total yards. A stingier defense puts the Mustangs in the hunt for a title game berth.

Emerging Teams With Momentum

• Georgia Tech is coming off its best season in more than a decade and looks to build off the success of a 9-4 campaign. It could’ve been even better if not for a closing stretch that saw them lose four of their last five outings.
• James Franklin had plenty of success during his tenure at Penn State and immediately boosted Virginia Tech’s national profile and recruiting ability. He brought with him a potential star in QB Ethan Grunkemeyer.
• With his focus strictly on football we’ll see if Bill Belichick can get North Carolina in the right direction. Bobby Petrino was hired as the team’s offensive coordinator to spark a high-scoring passing attack.

Dark Horse Candidates

• They’re not among the favorites so I’ll count the Clemson Tigers as a dark horse ACC championship contender. Facing pressure to restore their national identity, Dabo Swinney uncharacteristically targeted the transfer portal to upgrade the defense.
• For all his success at Penn State, Franklin was known for not being able to win the big one. He no longer has to worry about Ohio State and Michigan, and ACC favorite Miami is off the slate this year giving the Hokies a smoother path to conference wins.
• Last year’s regular season champion Virginia is getting overlooked. They won a program record 11 games last year and snagged Missouri’s Beau Pribula in the portal to guide the offense. A defense full of returnees and a favorable schedule puts the Cavs as a dark horse ACC championship contender.

The 2026 ACC title odds heavily favor Miami because they return a number of players from a roster that reached the national championship game while the rest of the conference is going through rebuilding and/or coaching staff transitions. We don’t always see a favorite with negative odds, but that’s where the Canes are. Priced at -165 it would take a $165 wager on Miami to win $100 profit. As good as Miami can be, that’s a steep price to pay with several other teams more than capable.

There’s a massive gap after Miami to cluster of teams with shorter than 19/1 odds. The group is led by Louisville (+785) with SMU (+800), Clemson (+1500), Virginia (+1750) and Pitt (+1850) included. Louisville and Clemson saw their college football odds stabilize after acquiring talented players in the portal to fill major roster spots.

In my opinion UVA is undervalued with most analysts viewing last season as a fluke. However, the Cavs return a steady cast of players and a schedule that skips Miami, Louisville and Clemson. For the first time in a while Clemson enters with lowered expectations giving them the ammunition needed for a return to the top.

• With Miami as a massive favorite on the betting board the rest of the ACC is left with generous, mispriced numbers giving all of them early value.
• Some teams are better positioned than others for a run at the title including the next two on the board Louisville and SMU. With strong rosters and solid coaching catching those teams at around 8/1 offers immediate early-season value.
• Coming off an 11-win season and regular season ACC title, I just can’t leave Virginia off this list. While the offense gets sorted out, the Cavs can dominate with a defense that returns a number of starters that formed the No. 2 scoring defense.

• There are four specific windows on the calendar where ACC futures odds become most attractive. The most stable value is offered during the summer window before the season begins.
• If a heavy favorite loses an early non-conference game or struggles to beat a lesser opponent, public panic typically forces sportsbooks to inflate their odds giving bettors a premium price on an elite team.

Who Will Win the ACC?

The biggest question is who will win the ACC? I would be surprised if Miami didn’t win the title, but not shocked. We saw a cluster bomb last year with five teams finishing tied for second behind Virginia with Duke getting the spot through tiebreakers and winning the title with a 7-5 regular season record. With an unbalanced schedule and new ranking system we shouldn’t see that chaos again leaving the true top two to battle it out in Charlotte.

Predicted Conference Champion

• From a talent standpoint Miami is the pick on who will win the ACC. An elite roster with unmatched depth allows the Canes to dominate. And Darian Mensah should have a better season than he did last year at Duke with a star-studded cast around him.
• Looking at betting value it’s hard to back the Canes at their negative odds price. That leaves the second tier of favorites with SMU and Louisville the best of the group.
• I wouldn’t count out Clemson considering the teams Dabo Swinney has assembled. The Tigers were down last year but some impressive gets in the portal on both sides of the ball has Clemson looking to return to the pinnacle.

One Team That Could Surprise

• A lot of signs are pointing to Virginia Tech as a team built to surprise in the ACC race. Landing James Franklin gives the Hokies credibility and a championship-level coach.
• Highly-touted QB Ethan Grunkemeyer followed Franklin to Blacksburg giving the Hokies the vertical passing threat they lacked in previous seasons.
• A tough schedule with five of the top six favorites on the season slate could be their downfall, though.
